• Where the GTD84 sits
  The GTD84 is a 7.4 cubic foot GE top-control electric dryer with an aluminised alloy drum, a Sanitize cycle, Sensor Dry and SmartHQ Wi-Fi on smart builds. It is a vented dryer on 240 volts, with a gas version of the series also made.
• The drum and its supports
  The drum rides on support rollers or glides and is turned by a belt that passes round an idler pulley and a motor pulley. These wear parts are where almost every noise on a dryer comes from.
• A thump or a squeal
  A rhythmic thump with each turn often means a flat spot on a worn roller or a worn drum glide. A squeal that begins when the drum starts usually comes from the idler pulley or the belt, and a scrape comes from the drum rubbing a seal.
• A rumble or a rattle
  A rumble from the base can be a worn motor bearing, and a rattle can be a coin or a button that has slipped past the lint screen into the cabinet. Check pockets before drying.
• No heat and noise together
  A dryer that makes a noise and also stops heating may be overheating on a blocked vent. Clean the lint screen and the vent before you decide a part has failed.
• What Sensor Dry does to a noisy drum
  Sensor Dry reads the load's dampness; a noisy dryer with a long cycle may have a drum that is not turning properly, so the sensor cannot read evenly.

  The label is inside the door opening; GE lists the full model as GTD84ECPNDG.
• Looking after the belt
  A dryer belt can crack with age. A belt that squeals or slaps may be close to failing, and replacing it early avoids a drum that suddenly stops turning mid-cycle.
• Gas and electric versions
  This series exists in electric and gas. A noisy dryer is the same wear-parts question on either; the gas version adds a burner assembly, which should be left to a qualified technician.
