GE dryer heats or runs but the drum does not tumble

GE dryer heats or runs but the drum does not tumble: a nonturning drum with motor sound commonly crosses the belt, idler, roller or drive-motor boundary. Scoped to PFD95E*.

If the GE PFD95's drum does not turn, GE's manual makes the checks simple: the dryer will not start with the door open, the control panel may be asleep, Start/Pause may not have been pressed or the dryer may be paused (the Start/Pause light flashes), Control Lock may be on, or the dryer may be held by Delay Dry. GE also says a load that is underloaded, one or two items, needs a few more items to tumble properly. A dryer that tumbles but does not heat is a different fault covered on the not-heating page.

Try in this order

0 of 5 completed
  1. Shut the door and wake the panel

    Reversible

The dryer will not start with the door open. Press Power if the screen is dark, choose a sensor cycle or Timed Dry and press Start/Pause.

  2. Check Control Lock

    Reversible

GE says you can lock the controls so nothing can be selected. To unlock, press and hold the Light pad for 3 seconds; the lock icon flashes while unlocking and turns off when unlocked.

  3. Check for a pause

    Reversible

If the light on the Start/Pause pad is flashing, the dryer is paused. Press Start/Pause to restart.

  4. Check Delay Dry

    Reversible

Delay Dry sets a start time in 1 hour increments up to 24 hours, and the countdown shows before the cycle starts. Clear the delay if you want the dryer to start now.

  5. Fix the load size

    Reversible

GE's table says that if you are drying only one or two items, add a few items to ensure proper tumbling. Do not put more than one washer load in the dryer at a time.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Panel behaviors that look like faults
The screen sleeps until Power is pressed, the dryer beeps twice when a chosen setting is incompatible with the cycle, no numbers may show during a cycle when only the Time Remaining light is on, and the time remaining can jump lower when a small load dries quickly. GE's table calls each of these normal.

Exact questions

Common questions

Why will my dryer not start?+

GE lists a sleeping panel, an unplugged dryer, a blown fuse, a paused Delay Dry and an open door.

How do I unlock the controls?+

Press and hold the Light pad for 3 seconds. The lock icon flashes, then turns off.

Why does one towel not tumble?+

GE says to add a few items when drying only one or two to ensure proper tumbling.

Does the dryer beep twice when I press a pad?+

Can Delay Dry look like a fault?+

Yes. The dryer counts down before the cycle starts, and a paused delay flashes the Start/Pause light.

Is the drum light relevant?+

The light comes on when the door opens or the Light pad is pressed and turns off after 5 minutes if the door stays open.

Can I reach into the drum?+

No, never reach into the drum while it is moving.
