Maytag dryer smells hot, scorched or like burning

Maytag dryer smells hot, scorched or like burning: stop the dryer until lint, airflow, foreign material and electrical or belt overheating are separated. Scoped to MED8630H*.

If a Maytag MED8630 smells of burning, stop it, unplug it and open the door. Maytag's owner's manual and quick start name the fire hazards: no washer can completely remove oil, so never dry anything that has had oil on it, including cooking oil; foam, rubber or plastic items must be dried on a clothesline or with an Air cycle; and a dryer placed less than 18 inches above the floor in a garage is an explosion hazard near flammable vapors. The manual also says lint in the vent and cabinet should be removed every two years.

  1. Stop, unplug and cool

    Reversible

Press Power to cancel, unplug the dryer if it is safe, open the door and take out the load. Do not leave a hot load packed in the drum.

  2. Check the load for oil and foam

    Reversible

Maytag's warnings say to dry nothing that has ever had oil or anything flammable on it and to dry foam, rubber and plastic on a clothesline or with an Air cycle.

  3. Clean the lint screen and drum

    Reversible

Roll the lint off the screen; wash it with a nylon brush every 6 months or when softener residue builds up. Clean the drum with a liquid nonflammable household cleaner or a microfiber cloth and very warm water.

  4. Check the vent

    Reversible

Clear the exhaust hood, and use no more than four 90 degree elbows in the vent. Remove lint from the whole vent at least every two years.

  5. Rule out a new-heater odor

    Reversible

For a first-time electric dryer Maytag's help says the new heating element may smell for the first cycle. If the smell continues beyond that, treat it as a fault.

Exact questions

Common questions

Is a smell on the first cycle normal?+

Maytag says the new electric heating element may have an odor that is gone after the first cycle. A strong burning smell is not normal.

Can I dry oily kitchen towels?+

No. The manual says no washer can completely remove oil and warns against drying anything that has ever had oil on it, including cooking oil.

Where can the dryer sit in a garage?+

At least 18 inches above the floor for a garage installation, because flammable vapors can collect low.

How often does lint need removing?+

From inside the cabinet and from the vent, at least every two years, or more often with heavy use.

Who cleans inside the cabinet?+

A qualified appliance service or ventilation system cleaner, says the manual.

Does a paint smell mean a fault?+

No. The dryer pulls room air through the load. Ventilate, then re-wash and dry the clothes.

Can I use foil vent?+

No. The manual says to use heavy rigid metal vent and not plastic or metal foil.

How do I clean stains from the drum?+

Use a liquid nonflammable household cleaner or a microfiber cloth with very warm water, then tumble clean towels.
