Troubleshooting a Whirlpool dryer

The PF code appears after a power failure and clears with the Start button or the power button. Check that the vent hose is not crushed behind the dryer and that the dryer is plugged in firmly.

Whirlpool dryers show codes for the vent, the heater and the sensors. A dryer that stops early or runs long usually has a vent problem, so clean the lint screen and the vent, check the outside hood and keep the hose short and straight. A heat fault on an electric dryer can come from a tripped breaker, since the dryer uses two poles and one can trip while the drum still turns.

Gas dryers depend on the gas supply and the igniter. Unplug the dryer for a minute to reset it. Heating elements, thermal fuses and gas valves are for a technician. Maytag and Amana dryers built by Whirlpool use many of the same codes.

Whirlpool dryers share parts with Maytag and Amana models, which is why many fault codes match. A long drying time almost always traces to a restricted vent, so check the exhaust before anything else. F codes point to the control or sensors and often need a power reset and a technician. Gas dryers need a working igniter and a clear gas supply, and a dryer that runs without heat on a 240-volt circuit may have lost one leg of the breaker.

Start from the model number on the label inside the door frame, because it tells you which dryer you own. Whirlpool electric dryers carry model numbers beginning WED and gas dryers beginning WGD, and that decides what a no-heat fault means: an electric dryer points to the element, thermal fuse or a house-circuit problem on its 240-volt supply, while a gas dryer points to the gas supply, the igniter or the gas valve. Note the code and whether the drum still turns before you call for service.
