Settings directory
Android settings paths: manufacturer variation noted.
Settings move. Home Product Support records the platform, version, path, consequences and last review date—then replaces old paths through a visible lifecycle record. Pick a topic below for the route through Settings on a Pixel or a Galaxy phone, and note where another maker names or orders the same option differently.
Change a default app on Android
Open Settings › Apps › Default apps on Google-style Android, then choose the role and app. Samsung and other makers may label the path differently; clearing one app's defaults can make Android ask again.

Open Settings › Apps › Default apps, choose the role—such as browser, phone or SMS—and select an eligible installed app. Menu names vary by manufacturer, but clearing all app data is not required.

Android menus differ by maker: Samsung's One UI, Google's Pixel software, OnePlus's OxygenOS and Motorola's near-stock Android all organize Settings differently. The search bar at the top of Settings finds an item on any of them, which is faster than following a path written for another brand. Settings, About phone shows the model and the Android version so you can match a guide to your phone.
Default apps are chosen under Settings, Apps, Choose default apps on most phones, and app permissions under Settings, Apps, the app, Permissions. Clearing an app's defaults only makes Android ask again, and clearing an app's data deletes its logins, so use cache clearing first.
Android menus differ between Samsung, Pixel and other makers, so a path from a Pixel guide may not match a Galaxy. Search the Settings app for the setting by name. Permissions are under Apps and the app's permissions, and notifications under Notifications; default apps live under Apps, Choose default apps on Samsung and under Apps, Default apps on Pixel.
Settings that look the same but behave differently are worth a note. Battery optimization can stop an app from running in the background, which is why a messaging or smart-home app may miss notifications until you set it to unrestricted; the option sits in the app's own page under Battery. Data saver and Wi-Fi assistance can interfere with streaming and with devices that need a local connection. Location services sit in their own section and control which apps can see where you are. Review permissions every few months, since an app that needed the camera once may keep the permission, and remove ones that no longer make sense.
Why does my Android settings menu look different from the guide?
Each maker customizes Settings. Use the search bar in Settings to find the option by name.
