Finding settings on a Mac

System Settings replaced System Preferences in macOS Ventura and keeps changing between releases, so a path from an older guide may be in a different place. The search field at the top of System Settings finds an item by name. Apple menu, About This Mac shows your macOS version and chip. Privacy and Security holds permissions for screen recording, accessibility, files and the camera, and an app that cannot see the screen usually needs its permission there and a restart.

System Settings on a Mac was redesigned in macOS Ventura, and the older System Preferences layout is gone, so a path from an earlier guide may not match what you see. The sidebar groups the settings, and the search field at the top finds a setting by name. The default browser is in Desktop and Dock, Network settings are in Wi-Fi or Network, and privacy permissions for apps such as screen recording and location are in Privacy and Security.

Many settings now ask for your password or Touch ID before they apply. If you are unsure which version you have, open the Apple menu, About This Mac. A setting that is missing may belong to a different macOS version or a managed Mac controlled by an administrator.
