How to change the default browser in Windows 11
Open Settings › Apps › Default apps, search for the browser, choose it, and set the supported web link and file types. Windows may offer a single Set default button; individual associations remain visible below it.

Use Settings › Apps › Startup or Task Manager › Startup apps and disable only the item you recognize. This prevents automatic launch; it does not uninstall the application or stop all background services.

Windows 11 moved most controls from the old Control Panel into Settings, and Microsoft rearranges pages between feature updates. The search box at the top of Settings finds a page by name. Settings, System, About shows the Windows edition and version so you can match a guide to your PC. Default apps are under Settings, Apps, Default apps, where you search for the app and set its file and link types.
Startup programs are under Settings, Apps, Startup, or in Task Manager's Startup apps tab, and turning an item off stops it launching at sign-in without uninstalling it.
Windows 11 moved many options from Control Panel into Settings, but some advanced ones remain in the classic Control Panel and Device Manager. Default apps are under Apps, Default apps, startup apps under Apps, Startup, and the default browser must be set per file type or link type. A setting that is grayed out may be controlled by an administrator on a work or school PC.
Updates deserve a mention because they change the layout. A feature update can move a setting or add a new section, and Windows may show a page that tells you about the change. If a driver update breaks a device, Device Manager lets you roll the driver back from the device's Driver tab. Storage Sense, under System, Storage, can clear temporary files on a schedule, and Reset this PC, under System, Recovery, offers to keep your files or remove everything. Make a backup before using it, and check that you have the details for any software that needs a license.
Why is a Windows setting grayed out?
It may be managed by an administrator or need administrator rights. Sign in with an administrator account or ask your IT team.
