Whirlpool dryer shows a vent, airflow or blockage warning

Whirlpool dryer shows a vent, airflow or blockage warning: treat a vent warning as measured airflow loss, not as a code to clear and ignore. Scoped to WED9620H*.

The Whirlpool WED9620 tells you when airflow is restricted with an AF or Check Vent message on the display. Whirlpool's own article says it means the lint screen or vent is clogged, or the vent is crushed, kinked or has too many turns; the dryer keeps running while it shows and any key clears it. Whirlpool's separate vent article adds a physical test, taking out the lint screen and feeling for airflow with the dryer set to Air Dry, and sells a dryer vent testing kit, part W11224254, for measuring it.

Differential

Likely causes of “Whirlpool dryer shows a vent, airflow or blockage warning”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

Lint packed in the vent or the outside hood

What separates it AF or Check Vent shows and drying takes several cycles

How to confirm Disconnect and clean the vent and clear the hood

  2. 2

A crushed or kinked vent behind the dryer

What separates it The vent was pushed back when the dryer was moved

How to confirm Pull the dryer forward, straighten or replace the vent, and check the length

  3. 3

A vent run that is too long or has too many turns

What separates it The message appears from the first loads on a new installation

How to confirm Compare the run with the Vent System Chart and shorten it

  4. 4

Nesting animals or debris at the exterior hood

What separates it Little lint on the screen and no air felt at the hood

How to confirm Clear the hood so the flap opens freely, at least 12 inches from the ground

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • Whether AF or Check Vent shows on every cycle or only some
  • The vent type, length and number of elbows
  • Whether air is felt at the outside hood while the dryer runs

Try in this order

0 of 5 completed
  1. Clean the lint screen

    Reversible

Take out the screen, roll off the lint and wash it if softener residue has built up. A blocked screen is the simplest cause of AF or Check Vent.

  2. Feel the airflow

    Reversible

With the screen removed and the dryer set to Air Dry or Air Fluff, place your hand in the lint trap area: airflow means the house vent is probably clear, little or none means it is probably restricted. This applies to models with the screen on top.

  3. Check the hood outside

    Reversible

Run the dryer for 5 to 10 minutes and hold your hand under the outside exhaust hood. The hood must be at least 12 inches (305 mm) from the ground or anything that could block it and the flap must open freely.

  4. Inspect the vent behind the dryer

    Reversible

Look for a crushed or kinked vent, foil or plastic material and lint build-up. Use only 4 inch heavy metal vent, with the straightest, shortest run.

  5. Test and clean

    Reversible

Use Whirlpool's dryer vent testing kit, part W11224254, or a professional vent cleaning service. Clean the vent every one to two years or when drying slows.

Does the dryer stop when it shows Check Vent?+

No. It keeps running; touch any key to clear the message and return to the estimated time remaining.

How do I test my vent?+

Feel for airflow with the screen out on Air Dry, check the outside hood, or use Whirlpool's dryer vent testing kit, part W11224254.

What if water drips behind the dryer?+

It can be moisture from a restricted vent collecting in the venting. Clear the vent.

Every one to two years or as needed when drying performance has dropped.

Who can clean it?+

You can, or a professional vent cleaning service can clean and inspect it.
