Frigidaire FFFW5000 front-load washer shows excessive suds, SUD or Sd behavior

Frigidaire FFFW5000 front-load washer shows excessive suds, SUD or Sd behavior: excess or non-HE detergent can extend the cycle, suppress spin and cause drain errors. Scoped to FFFW5000Q*.

Frigidaire has a named code for suds on its front-loaders: its owner-support article for F2 covers too many suds or suds overflowing. Frigidaire's use and care guide for the FFFW5000 gives the fix: run a rinse cycle, use a low-sudsing high-efficiency detergent and use less detergent in future loads. Oversudsing also lengthens the estimated cycle time and can cause leaks, and the guide lists overdosing and non-HE detergent as causes of odor and residue in the gasket and dispenser as well.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Suds and the display
The guide says the estimated cycle time may increase if oversudsing occurs. Frigidaire also says to remove the dispenser drawer and clean it if residue builds up, because detergent and softener build-up in the drawer can add to sudsing and odor problems that look like a detergent issue.
Why an HE front-loader needs HE detergent
The FFFW5000 uses a small amount of water in a sealed horizontal drum, so a detergent that suds heavily has nowhere to go. Frigidaire's guide asks for HE detergent at the recommended dosage in its odor, residue and oversudsing sections alike, and its solutions table says to run a rinse cycle after an oversudsing event and use less detergent in future loads.
Blue stains and softener
Frigidaire's guide also ties blue stains to undiluted liquid detergent or fabric softener poured directly on fabric; a soak in one cup of white vinegar in a quart of water for an hour, then a rinse, removes detergent stains, and softener stains come out with bar soap. Both are avoided by not overfilling the detergent and softener compartments, so a measured dose in the right compartment also prevents the residue that looks like suds.
