GE PFW950 front-load washer door or lid will not unlock

GE PFW950 front-load washer door or lid will not unlock: do not force the door; most controls keep it locked while water, heat or motion is detected. Scoped to PFW950S*.

GE's own Door Lock article says the front-load washer door locks automatically when it starts and that pressing Start/Pause once pauses the washer and unlocks the door, though it takes a few seconds; in some cycles the washer drains first and then unlocks. GE's manual adds that adding items after the washer has started means pressing Start/Pause and waiting until the door is unlatched, which can take up to 30 seconds, and never forcing the door while the LOCKED indicator is on. During the UltraFresh Vent feature the door stays locked while the washer intermittently spins at low speed for up to 8 hours, and it can be cancelled with the Power pad.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

The door message
The display shows door if you try to start a cycle when the door is not fully closed, and also if 3 cycles have been started without opening the door. The washer will not start another cycle until the door is opened. In either case GE says to try opening and closing the door and then starting a new cycle, and to schedule service only if the problem persists.
Control Lock
Control Lock may be a shared pad with other options. Press and hold it for 3 seconds to lock or unlock the washer; a sound confirms the change and the control lock icon lights on the display while it is on. A washer that ignores every button and shows the icon is locked, and GE says to press and hold the Control Lock button for 3 seconds if the door unlocks or Start does nothing.
