GE PFW950 front-load washer stops, pauses or powers off mid-cycle

GE PFW950 front-load washer stops, pauses or powers off mid-cycle: record the stage and display state; a repeatable stop during fill, heat, drain or spin is diagnostically different. Scoped to PFW950S*.

A GE Profile PFW950 that stops mid-cycle usually tells you on the display through the Consumer Help Indicator. CAnCELEd scrolls if the machine was paused longer than 24 hours or stopped itself before the cycle finished due to certain errors, and starts a 4 minute lock-out in which the controls do not respond. H2O SUPPLY means water is not entering. door means the door was not fully closed or 3 cycles ran without opening it. GE's troubleshooting table also lists the washer pausing or needing a restart, with a locked door, as a clogged pump filter, and says the washer pauses up to 3 minutes normally and rebalances the load during the spin.

Consumer Help Indicator in GE's words
CHI is GE's way of communicating a simple remedy for some situations you can handle without calling for service. The messages scroll on the display when you return to start another load. For the Spin light, an out-of-balance condition makes it blink during the rest of the cycle and stay lit briefly after the cycle ends while the washer corrects the imbalance and completes the cycle normally.
Pump filter and pauses
GE lists a clogged pump filter as the cause when the washer pauses or has to be restarted, or when the door is locked and will not open. Small items from pockets can reach the pump and clog the filter, so cleaning it is the free check that most often ends a mid-cycle stop. Clean it monthly if you wash pocket-prone loads such as jeans and work clothes.
