Kenmore's guide for the 796 front-loader explains the dispenser: a main wash compartment for HE detergent (liquid or powder), a bleach compartment and a fabric softener compartment, with the detergent added at the start of the cycle and the softener dispensed during the final rinse. Do not exceed the maximum fill line, dilute concentrated softener with warm water, never pour softener onto the load, and do not add color-safe bleach to the bleach dispenser: it goes in the main wash compartment with detergent of the same type. To clean it: pull the drawer out until it stops, press down the lock tab between the bleach and softener compartments and slide it out, remove the liquid detergent box, softener and bleach inserts and clean everything with warm water.
Differential
Likely causes of “Kenmore 796-series front-load washer does not dispense detergent”, and how to tell them apart
- 1
Buildup in the drawer
What separates it The dispenser does not dispense properly because of build up in the drawer
How to confirm Clean the compartments and inserts periodically with warm water
- 2
An overfilled compartment or a drawer closed too quickly
What separates it Bleach or softener dispenses immediately because a compartment is overfilled or the drawer was closed too quickly
How to confirm Do not exceed the maximum fill line; close the drawer gently
- 3
Bleach or softener poured directly on the load
What separates it There is staining because bleach or softener was poured directly on the load
How to confirm Load laundry chemicals into the dispenser only, and not directly on the load
- 4
Liquid and powder mixed in one compartment
What separates it There is clumping and poor dispensing because liquid and powder were mixed in one compartment
How to confirm Never mix them in the same compartment, and use one product each
- 5
Top-loader (796.3143): powder used with the liquid detergent cup
What separates it Powder detergent stays in the drawer or clumps and does not rinse away
How to confirm Remove the liquid detergent cup and insert when using powder, and fill only the correct compartment
- 6
Top-loader (796.3143): softener or bleach dispensed at the wrong time
What separates it Bleach or softener seems to release immediately and stain the load
How to confirm Measure bleach to one cup maximum and close the dispenser drawer slowly and fully before starting
Before you touch a setting
Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence
- Which compartment has the problem and what product is in it
- Whether the drawer was closed slowly
- When the drawer was last cleaned
Try in this order
0 of 7 completedPull the drawer
ReversiblePull the drawer, by pulling it out until it stops, and then test again to see whether it helped.
Release the lock tab
ReversiblePress down the tab between the bleach and softener compartments and slide the drawer out.
Remove the inserts
ReversibleRemove the inserts, which are the liquid detergent box, the softener and the bleach inserts.
Wash them
ReversibleWash them, since warm water clears the compartments and the inserts, and then test again to see whether it helped.
Refit and close gently
ReversibleRefit and close gently, since closing too quickly can dispense bleach or softener at once.
Match the compartment to the product
ReversibleOn the 796.3143 use only HE detergent. If liquid detergent is used, the liquid cup and insert must be in the detergent compartment; if powder is used, remove the liquid cup and insert. Always close the dispenser drawer fully before the cycle starts.
Select the softener option
ReversibleFabric softener is dispensed in the final rinse. In Normal and Heavy Duty the washer uses a spray rinse, so press FABRIC SOFTENER or EXTRA RINSE, or the softener will be much less effective.
Model-specific
What is true of this model and not of its siblings
- Detergent facts from the guide
- Kenmore says HE detergents produce fewer suds, dissolve more efficiently and help keep the washer interior clean; detergent that is not HE may cause oversudsing and unsatisfactory performance, which could result in error codes, cycle failure and machine damage. On the 796.3143 top-loader the normal amount of HE detergent for average loads is less than half of the recommended maximum, and less again for soft water, light soil or small loads.
- Detergent pods
- On the top-loader Kenmore says to place a detergent pod in the tub before loading laundry, not in the dispenser, and to measure detergent with the measuring device provided by the detergent maker. Do not store laundry products on top of the washer or dryer, and wipe up spills immediately; some products damage the finish.
- Dispenser drawer care
- Remove the drawer by pulling it straight out until it stops, lift the front and pull it free, remove the inserts, and rinse everything in warm water. Clean the opening with a small non-metal brush and return the inserts to the right compartments before replacing the drawer.
