For a Kenmore 796 washer that does not clean well, Kenmore's guide points to detergent, sorting and dispensing. Use only HE detergent; on the top-loader the normal amount for average loads is under half the recommended maximum, less for soft water, light soil or small loads. Load chemicals in the dispenser, never on the load; unload promptly; sort dark from light; never wash heavily soiled items with lightly soiled ones; and for stains use the washer's own options: Steam Treat on the front-loader adds steam for added cleaning power, Pre Wash handles heavy soil, and Stain Boost on the top-loader starts warm and adds hot water gradually. Run the Clean Washer cycle regularly.
Differential
Likely causes of “Kenmore 796-series front-load washer does not clean clothes well”, and how to tell them apart
- 1
Wrong or too much detergent
What separates it There is buildup, suds and poor rinsing because the wrong or too much detergent was used

- 2
Chemicals added directly to the load
What separates it There is staining because chemicals were added directly to the load
How to confirm Use the dispensers, and do not pour chemicals on the load
- 3
Poor sorting

Try in this order
0 of 7 completedUse HE detergent
ReversibleUse HE detergent, and follow the manufacturer's amount, with less for soft water or light soil.
Use the dispensers, and do not pour chemicals on the load
ReversibleUse the dispensers, since the detergent, bleach and softener go in their compartments, and then test again to see whether it helped.
Choose a stain option
ReversibleChoose a stain option, such as Steam Treat, Pre Wash, or Stain Boost on the top loader.
Sort properly
ReversibleSort properly, by separating dark from light, and heavily soiled from lightly soiled, and then test again to see whether it helped.
Run Clean Washer
ReversibleRun Clean Washer regularly, to clear the residue that dulls the wash, and then test again to see whether it helped.
Choose options for the soil
ReversibleFor heavily soiled loads select STAIN BOOST on the 796.3143. The wash starts in warm water to avoid setting stains and hot water is added gradually. Kenmore says it works best with smaller loads, under about 6 pounds, and it cannot be combined with Energy Saver.
Load and sort properly
ReversibleDo not overload; the tub should not be tightly packed and the lid should close easily. Sort dark colors from light and heavily soiled from lightly soiled items, and remember stains that have been through a dryer may have set and need pretreating.
Model-specific
What is true of this model and not of its siblings
- Loading and wrinkling
- Kenmore says that when washing large loads you should not overstuff the drum: the washer can be fully loaded but the drum should not be tightly packed and the door should close easily. A hot water rinse can set wrinkles, so check the inlet hose connections in case the hot and cold hoses are reversed. Remove items promptly after the cycle.
- Detergent notes
- Detergents designated as HE compatible may not give optimal results, and extra care is needed with concentrated detergents, because even a little extra can cause oversudsing and residue. Kenmore's own guidance is to always look for the HE symbol when buying detergent and to use less for small loads.
- Cleaning power settings
- Soil Level changes cycle time and wash action, Deep Fill adds water for large or bulky loads, and Soak presoaks up to 180 minutes before the selected cycle. Deep Fill can only be selected or cleared while the cycle is running, and once added it stays as a default for that cycle until deselected.
