Samsung front-load or top-load washer will not fill with water or fills too slowly

Samsung front-load or top-load washer will not fill with water or fills too slowly: verify both water supplies, inlet screens, hose routing and the selected cycle before treating the inlet valves or pressure system as failed. Scoped to WF50BG8300A*.

A Samsung WF50BG8300 that will not fill is usually a supply problem before it is a washer problem. Samsung's checklist is: faucets fully open, hoses not frozen, kinked or clogged, door closed and enough water pressure, which the specification sheet puts at 20 to 116 psi (137 to 800 kPa). The other frequent cause is the small mesh filter inside each inlet valve, which the washer reports as 4C when it clogs and which the manual says to clean once or twice a year.

Differential

Likely causes of “Samsung front-load or top-load washer will not fill with water or fills too slowly”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

A water tap that is not fully open or a supply hose that is kinked

What separates it The washer clicks and starts but only trickles or never fills, and the display shows 4C

How to confirm Open both taps fully and follow each hose from the wall to the washer for a bend

  2. 2

A clogged mesh filter in a water inlet valve

What separates it 4C returns and water pressure at the tap is strong when you test it into a bucket

How to confirm Turn off the water, disconnect the hoses and pull the mesh filters out with pliers to look at them

  3. 3

Frozen supply hoses in a cold laundry room

What separates it The washer will not fill in winter and the room is below freezing

How to confirm Check the location temperature; Samsung says the washer may freeze when it drops below 32 F (0 C)

  4. 4

Water pressure below the 20 psi minimum

What separates it Other taps in the house are also weak and the filters are clean

How to confirm Measure the pressure at the laundry tap or ask a plumber; Samsung's range for this washer is 20 to 116 psi

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • Whether the display shows 4C, 4C2 or another information code
  • Whether both taps are fully open and how strongly water flows from each into a bucket
  • Whether the laundry room can drop below freezing and when the mesh filters were last cleaned

Try in this order

0 of 5 completed
  1. Check the taps, the door and the hoses

    Reversible

Fully open both taps, close the door and look along each supply hose for a kink or ice. Samsung lists all of these ahead of any part fault.

  2. Measure the pressure in a bucket

    Reversible

Disconnect a hose from the washer, aim it into a bucket and open the tap. A weak stream points at the house supply, not the washer. The WF50BG8300 needs 20 to 116 psi (137 to 800 kPa).

  3. Clean both mesh filters

    Reversible

With the washer unplugged and the taps closed, disconnect the two hoses at the back, pull the mesh filter from each inlet valve with pliers, wash it in water and dry it out of direct sunlight, then reinsert it and reconnect the hoses. The manual says a clogged mesh filter is what 4C reports.

  4. Thaw the supply if the room was cold

    Reversible

Follow Samsung's freezing recovery: unplug the washer, pour warm water over the tap, soak the hose, pour warm water in the drum for about 10 minutes and reconnect the hose.

  5. Restart and time the fill

    Reversible

Open the taps, plug the washer in and start a cycle. If it fills normally you are done; if 4C persists after the filters are clean, power off for 2 to 3 minutes, try again and call service if it does not clear.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Water connections
Two hoses at the back, each with a mesh filter in its inlet valve. The manual says never reuse old hoses and to check that a rubber washer sits in each coupling.
Hot water
Samsung asks for at least 120 F (49 C) hot water at the tap.
Tools and supplies
Pliers for the mesh filters, a bucket to test the flow, towels and a cloth to cover each hose end while it is off.

Stop boundary

When this stops being a self-service repair

  • !If water is entering the drum without a cycle running, close both taps and unplug the washer and call service
  • !If 4C comes back after the mesh filters are clean and the hoses are straight, stop and call Samsung service

Exact questions

Common questions

What does 4C mean on a Samsung WF50BG8300?+

It points to the water supply line. Check the connections to the water lines and taps, and clean the mesh filter on the water hose; the manual notes a clogged mesh filter shows 4C.

How often should the mesh filters be cleaned?+

Once or twice a year, and more often if the water comes from an aged system or a well.

What water pressure does this washer need?+

20 to 116 psi (137 to 800 kPa), according to the specification sheet.

Is it normal for the washer to click before filling?+

Yes. Samsung says the washer makes a series of clicking noises to check the door lock and does a quick drain before it starts to fill.

Why does hot or cold water only come through the dispenser?+

That is the automatic temperature control checking the incoming water; Samsung calls it a normal function.

Can a frozen hose stop the fill?+

Yes. Below 32 F (0 C) the washer and hoses can freeze; Samsung's recovery is warm water on the tap and hose and about 10 minutes of warm water in the drum.

Should I call service for slow filling?+

Only after taps, hoses, pressure and mesh filters are ruled out. Samsung's list has no other fill fix.

Why does the manual tell me to cover the hose end with a cloth?+

Water can gush out when a hose is disconnected. Cover the end of each hose with a cloth or towel while you clean the mesh filters.

How do I dry the mesh filters?+

Dry them completely but not in direct sunlight, then reinsert them and reconnect the hoses. Open the taps last.

Do I need new hoses when I reinstall the washer?+

Yes. Samsung says not to reuse old water hoses, which may leak or burst, and to make sure rubber washers sit in each coupling of both hoses.

Does the washer need hot water to fill?+

The WF50BG8300 draws hot and cold, and Samsung asks for hot water of at least 120 F (49 C) at the tap. A missing hot supply mostly affects warm and hot cycles.

What if the fill is fine but the water is the wrong temperature?+

Check the hoses are connected to the correct taps, flush the water lines, check the mesh filters and the water heater; the automatic temperature control also mixes water as it checks the supply.
