Samsung washing machines: codes, drain, door and Wi-Fi

Samsung sells top-load washers with an agitator-free wash plate and front-load washers with the Super Speed and steam features, and the families are listed by model here. Most calls fall into four groups: a code on the display such as the drain, door or unbalance code, a washer that will not drain or spin, a door that will not lock or unlock and a washer that loses its SmartThings connection. Each group has its own page for the model, since a top-load and a front-load fail in different ways.

Start with the code. Samsung's washers show short letter codes for water inlet, drain, door and imbalance, and the code page lists what each means and what you can check. For a drain code, clear the pump filter behind the small panel at the bottom front of a front-load washer or check the drain hose behind a top-load one. For a door code, look for a sock in the seal and close the door firmly. For an unbalance code, redistribute the load and level the washer.

The model number is on a label inside the door opening or on the back of the cabinet, and Samsung's support asks for it together with the serial number. Keep it with the receipt. SmartThings pairing needs a 2.4 GHz network, and Samsung's Smart Care feature can run a check through the app that reads the washer's fault memory before you decide whether to call a technician.

Samsung also publishes a Smart Care check inside the SmartThings app, which reads the washer's fault memory and suggests a likely cause before you phone anyone. Open the app, choose the washer, then run Smart Check or Smart Care as the screen describes. If the app reports a code that you did not see on the display, note it, because intermittent faults often leave a record. Keep the washer connected to your account so that firmware updates arrive, since some drain and balance faults on earlier production runs were corrected by software.
