eero's own advice on dropouts comes from its placement and roaming articles. Place eeros 20 to 30 feet apart, no more than 50 feet, out in the open, at a height halfway between floor and ceiling and away from microwaves, refrigerators, metal furniture, cordless phones, baby monitors, mirrors, aquariums and fluorescent lights. A wireless eero that is too far from the rest of the network cannot hold a strong link, and a far-away node is the usual cause of drops in one room.
The checks in more detail
If devices cling to a distant eero instead of the nearest one, eero says devices have their own roaming thresholds, so first make sure Client Steering is on in Settings, Advanced networking, then move the eero away from electronics or out of a cabinet, or closer to the gateway. Check the LED: flashing white means connecting, and solid red means offline.
Restart the affected eero in the app under the more options menu, Restart, and if the gateway is restarted the whole network goes offline for a moment. Update to the latest eeroOS, which eero pushes on a rolling basis. If the drops involve one device, forget the network on it and reconnect, and turn wifi off for five seconds to encourage it to pick the nearest eero. A useful habit is to note which eero the dropping device is attached to, which the app shows under the device, before changing anything.
If it is attached to an eero in another room, the problem is roaming rather than the network, and moving the nearest eero away from other electronics is the fix eero gives. Changes to a single eero are easier to judge than changes to the whole home.
Differential
Likely causes of “eero mesh wifi Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting”, and how to tell them apart
- 1
A wireless eero too far from its neighbor
What separates it The wifi drops in one room because a wireless eero is too far from its neighbor
How to confirm Move it closer, 20 to 30 feet apart
- 2
Interference
What separates it The wifi drops whenever a microwave or a cordless phone is being used nearby
How to confirm Move the eero away from appliances and cordless phones
- 3
A device clinging to a far eero
What separates it The signal is weak in a room that is close to another eero because a device holds on to a far one
How to confirm Turn on Client Steering and toggle wifi on the device
- 4
A cabinet or closet
What separates it The signal is smothered because the eero sits inside a cabinet or a closet
How to confirm Put the eero out in the open, at about halfway between the floor and the ceiling, in the room
- 5
An eero that is busy updating
What separates it There is a brief dropout because the eero is busy installing an update
How to confirm Wait for the LED to return to solid white
Before you touch a setting
Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence
- Which eero and room the drops happen in
- The time of day and what else is running
- The LED color when it drops
- Whether one device or all devices drop
Try in this order
0 of 6 completedCheck the app
ReversibleCheck the app to see whether the eero shows as online, before you change anything else.
Improve placement
ReversibleImprove the placement by putting eeros 20 to 30 feet apart, in the open, halfway up the wall.
Enable Client Steering
ReversibleEnable Client Steering in Settings, then Advanced networking, so devices move to the best eero.
Forget and rejoin on the device
ReversibleForget and rejoin the network on the device, and then toggle wifi off for five seconds and on.
Update eeroOS
ReversibleUpdate eeroOS in Settings under Software updates, since new versions can improve roaming and stability.
Add a wired link
ReversibleAdd a wired link, since Ethernet between eeros is faster and steadier than a wireless link.
Model-specific
What is true of this model and not of its siblings
- Bands
- The Pro 6E, Max 7 and Pro 7 add the 6 GHz band, and Client Steering can encourage compatible devices onto it.
- Beacon
- The Beacon is wireless-only, so placement matters most for it.
- Other models this page answers
- These steps also fit the eero Pro 6E, eero Pro 6, eero 6, eero Pro (2nd generation).
Stop boundary
When this stops being a self-service repair
- !If drops continue on Ethernet and after a restart, contact eero support
- !If only one device drops, check its wifi driver and forget and rejoin the network
- !If a specific eero keeps going offline, swap it with another to test the unit

Exact questions
Common questions
How far apart should eeros be?+
20 to 30 feet, and no more than 50, per eero.
What height is best?+
The best height is halfway between the floor and the ceiling, in open space.
Will an eero work in a cabinet?+
It works better in the open.
What is Client Steering?+
A setting that nudges devices toward 5 GHz, 6 GHz and the nearest eero.
Why does my device use a far eero?+
Each device has its own roaming threshold.
Does the wall material matter?+
Brick, stone and metal block wifi most.
Can I wire my eeros?+
Yes, and it may increase speed and strength.
How do I restart one eero?+
Tap it in the app, then more options, Restart.
What does solid green mean on an eero?+
Solid green means the eero is in power saving, which is a normal state and not a fault.
What does solid aqua mean on an eero?+
Solid aqua means the network is using hotspot internet, so check whether your main connection has failed.
What does flashing red mean while resetting an eero?+
Flashing red is the light shown while the eero is resetting, so wait for it to finish before you do anything.
What is DFS on an eero?+
DFS is Dynamic Frequency Selection, which lets the eero use wifi channels that are shared with radar and satellite services.
How long is the warranty on the eero Max 7?+
