NETGEAR Orbi mesh wifi will not complete setup

NETGEAR Orbi mesh wifi (Orbi 970, 960, 850 and 750 series) will not complete setup: modem/ONT provisioning, WAN type, app/account and cabling should be proved before resets. Scoped to Orbi 970 Series (RBE971/RBE970), with the Orbi 960, 850 and 750 series in the model notes.

NETGEAR recommends the Orbi app or a web browser for setup. A solid white ring on the router means it is ready to set up and pulsing white means it is powering up or connecting. Connect the modem to the router's internet port, power both, and follow the app or go to orbilogin.net. The default user name is admin. After setup, satellites sync with the router; press the Sync buttons if one does not join, and use the ring LED to judge placement:

The checks in more detail

blue is good, amber is fair, and magenta means it failed to sync. If setup fails, NETGEAR has pages for setup issues and for setting up again after a factory reset: press the Reset button with a paper clip until the power LED blinks amber, and note that a reset erases the network name and password and that an active NETGEAR Armor or Smart Parental Controls subscription must be reactivated in the Orbi app.

Use Access Point mode only if another router is in front; then Port Forwarding, Parental Controls, Armor, QoS and other functions are grayed out. Update firmware after setup and keep your admin credentials safe. Before you start, write down the provider's name, the modem model and any settings the provider gave you, and decide where the satellites will go. A tidy first setup avoids resets later, and a screenshot of the wifi settings makes it easy to restore them. Set up from a phone on mobile data rather than another wifi network to avoid confusion, since the app needs to talk to the router directly during setup.

Keep the setup screens open until the ring settles, because leaving the app mid-way can leave the router half configured and the ring stuck, which a factory reset then has to clear.
