A UniFi switch that restarts or runs hot needs power and airflow checked. Ubiquiti's LED article says switch LCD screens may remain dark for several minutes after an update, which can look like a fault, and its offline article says to check signs of power, replace cables, try another port and use the RMA portal for a faulty unit in warranty. A rack switch with a 400 W PoE budget generates heat:
The checks in more detail
keep vents and fans clear, leave space between units, avoid stacking under other hot equipment and use blanking panels to guide airflow. Inspect the AC cable, the outlet and any power strip, and add a UPS if the mains supply is unreliable. If the switch reboots when many PoE devices power on, the total load may exceed the budget; move devices or add capacity. The LED strobing white and off means power cycle the device and contact support if it repeats;
flashing white, blue and off is TFTP mode entered by holding the Reset button at power-on, so check the button clicks freely. Look at the Network application's logs for reboot reasons, update the firmware, and if it keeps restarting after a factory reset, request an RMA. A reset takes five to ten seconds on the button. Treat a rack as a system: intake at the front, exhaust at the back, no blocked cable bundles and blanking panels in empty slots.
Measure with your hand at the exhaust after an hour of load, and compare with a cool morning reading. If the temperature climbs through the day, the room, not the switch, may be the problem, and moving the rack or adding ventilation costs far less than a new switch. Check that the fans are turning and that no cable bundle covers the intake; a switch that runs quiet but hot may have a stalled fan, which is a warranty matter.

Likely causes of “Ubiquiti UniFi Switch Pro Max 24 PoE restarts, freezes or overheats”, and how to tell them apart
- 1
Blocked vents
What separates it Blocked vents are making the switch run hot
How to confirm Clear the airflow around the switch, and leave space at its vents
- 2
PoE overload
What separates it The switch restarts when devices power on because the PoE load is too heavy
How to confirm Reduce the PoE load, by moving some devices to another power source
- 3
Unstable mains power
What separates it The switch restarts at random because the mains power is unstable
How to confirm Use a UPS, which smooths out dips and cuts in the mains power
- 4
A jammed Reset button
What separates it A Reset button stuck down puts the switch into TFTP mode on start-up
How to confirm Press the Reset button to confirm it clicks and returns, and is not jammed
- 5
A failing switch
What separates it It keeps restarting after a reset, which suggests the unit itself is failing
How to confirm Claim an RMA while under warranty, as a failing switch will keep rebooting
Before you touch a setting
Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence
- What the LEDs do around a restart
- The PoE load that the connected devices are using
- How much airflow the switch has in the rack
Try in this order
0 of 7 completedCheck airflow
ReversibleCheck the airflow around the switch, including the vents and the spacing in the rack.
Check power
ReversibleRule out the supply: look at the cable, the outlet and any UPS.
Check PoE load
ReversibleCheck the PoE load against the budget, to see whether the switch is being overloaded.
Read the LED
ReversibleWatch the light; a strobing white means the device should be power cycled.
Check the Reset button
ReversibleMake sure nothing is holding the Reset button down and that it clicks freely.
Update firmware
ReversibleUpdate the firmware, and then watch the logs to see whether the restarts have stopped.
RMA if it persists
ReversibleIf the fault persists and the warranty still runs, send it back under an RMA.
Model-specific
What is true of this model and not of its siblings
- Fans
- The rack switch uses fans; keep the intake clear.
- PoE
- Budget is shared across all PoE ports.
Stop boundary
When this stops being a self-service repair
- !A switch that still restarts after a clean reset should be returned under RMA
- !A strobing white LED means power cycle it and then contact support

Exact questions
Common questions
Why does my switch run hot?+
The usual reasons for heat are blocked vents or a heavy PoE load on the switch.
Why is the LCD dark after an update?+
The screen can stay dark for several minutes after an update, which is normal.
Can PoE overload restart it?+
A PoE overload can make the switch drop devices, and sometimes it restarts as well.
