Epson printers will not connect to Wi-Fi

Epson printers (EcoTank, Expression and WorkForce Pro) will not connect to Wi-Fi: printer radio, supported band/security, setup mode, router isolation and account/app should be separated. Scoped to EcoTank ET-4850 (C11CJ60202), with the other Epson EcoTank, Expression, SureColor and WorkForce Pro models in the model notes.

Epson's guide describes several ways to connect, and its status codes explain the prompts. The simplest is the Epson Smart Panel app on iOS or Android, or the Wi-Fi Setup Wizard in the control panel: choose it and press OK, select your network name and enter the password. For push-button setup Epson's code I-22 says to press the button on the router or access point, or click the button on its wireless settings screen.

The checks in more detail

For PIN setup, I-23 says to enter the PIN shown on the LCD into the router, access point or computer within two minutes; after that a time-out occurs and the code changes, so you must enter a new one. Code I-31 says to make the wireless connection settings from your computer by running the installer and following its instructions. The guide also covers Wi-Fi infrastructure mode setup, selecting wireless network settings from the control panel and network security recommendations.

Set up near the router, use the 2.4 GHz network if the model needs it, and avoid special characters in the password. If the printer cannot find the network, restart the router, move closer and repeat. After setup print a network status sheet to check the signal, and reserve the address on the router. If the network changes, run the wizard again. I-41 says the Paper Setup Auto Display must be enabled to use AirPrint, and I-60 covers Scan to PC WSD support.

Write the network name and password on a note beside the printer before you start, and set up near the router. Once it works, move it and print the network status sheet again to confirm the signal. If your router has separate names for its two bands, join the printer to the one it supports, and avoid a name with special characters. Use the network status sheet's address to open the printer's own web page from a computer, which lets you check wireless settings without walking to the printer.

Differential

Likely causes of “Epson printers will not connect to Wi-Fi”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

    A PIN timed out

What separates it The screen shows code I-23 because the PIN timed out

How to confirm Enter the new PIN within two minutes, before it expires

  2. 2

What separates it The printer cannot join because the wifi password is wrong

How to confirm Retype the password carefully, checking capital letters and symbols

  3. 3

    The wrong band

What separates it The printer cannot see the network because it is on the wrong band

How to confirm Use a 2.4 GHz network, if your model requires that band

  4. 4

    A far router

What separates it The signal is weak because the router is far from the printer

How to confirm Move the printer closer to the router, and try the setup again

  5. 5

    A changed router

What separates it The connection is lost because the router was changed

How to confirm Run the Wi-Fi Setup Wizard again, to join the new network

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • The signal on the status sheet
  • Whether the router has been changed recently

Watch the two minute limit for the PIN, and enter it in time, and then test again to see whether it helped.

  5. Print a network status sheet

    Reversible

Print a network status sheet, and check the signal strength that it shows, and then test again to see whether it helped.

  6. Reserve the address

    Reversible

Reserve the address on the router, so that the printer keeps the same address, and then test again to see whether it helped.

  7. Repeat after router changes
