What is true of this model and changes how you fix it
These are the properties that decide which procedure applies. Each is read from the manufacturer’s own published figures for this model, not carried over from a sibling that shares its retail name.
- Type — MONOCHROME LASER all-in-one (toner)
- A black-and-white laser AIO (print/scan/copy/fax, duplex, wireless) — it prints only in BLACK (no colour), which is by design for fast, low-cost text, not a fault. Laser uses toner and does not clog from disuse.
- Toner & drum
- Faded print is usually low toner or a poorly seated cartridge; streaks/repeating marks point to the toner or drum. No colour output because it is a mono printer.
- Connectivity
- Wi-Fi/Ethernet/USB via HP Smart; 'offline' is usually a network/queue issue.

Questions that only have an answer for the HP LaserJet Pro 4101fdw
Each answer below uses this model’s own published figures. The same question asked about a different model in the line has a different answer, which is why it is answered here rather than on a general page.
Why won't my HP LaserJet 4101fdw print in colour?+
It cannot — the 4101fdw is a monochrome (black-and-white) laser printer, so it only prints in black by design; there is no colour toner in it. A colour document simply prints in greyscale. That is not a fault or a setting to change. If you need colour, you would need a colour laser (like the 4301 series) or a colour inkjet. For fast, cheap text and documents, the mono laser is ideal.
