Decode a Kohler generator engine serial number: find the age

Kohler used a running numeric index rather than a simple two-digit year, and the index's meaning shifted as the serial number itself grew longer between 1965 and 2011.

Kohler engines, used in many Kohler-brand standby generators, do not use a simple two-digit-year-plus-month code the way several other brands on this site do; instead, a detailed Kohler-originated reference documents a running numeric index that shifted as the serial number itself grew longer. From 1965 through 1968, the serial opened with a single letter, A for 1965 through D for 1968. Starting in 1969, Kohler switched to a leading numeric index:

on 7-digit serials used from 1969 to 1979, the first two digits ran 10 through 99 across those eleven years; on 8-digit serials used from 1980 to 1985, the index moved to the first three digits; on 10-digit serials used from 1985 to 2011, the first two digits continued the same running index, with 1985 at 15 and 2011 at 41. This site could not confirm a published rule for Kohler generator serials made after 2011.

Enter at least four characters of the serial number to see an estimated manufacture date.

What this covers

  • Kohler engines with a single leading letter A–D, built 1965–1968
  • Kohler engines with a 7-digit serial, built 1969–1979, reading the year from a running index in the first two digits
  • Kohler engines with an 8-digit serial (1980–1985) or 10-digit serial (1985–2011), reading the year from a running index using more of the leading digits

What it does not cover

  • ×Kohler engines built after 2011 — no published rule for this era could be confirmed
  • ×Any assumption that the numeric index maps directly to the last two digits of the year — it is a running count, not a calendar-year abbreviation
  • ×Kohler generators that use a different engine brand, which this page does not cover

  1. Locate the engine serial number

    Reversible

Check the engine's own data plate or stamped surface, separate from the generator system's model/serial label.

  2. Count the serial's digits to identify the length era

    Reversible

A 7-digit, 8-digit or 10-digit numeric serial points to a different span of years, per the reference's own tables.

  3. Read the leading digits as the running index for that length

    Reversible

The index is a running count across years, not a direct two-digit year — for example, 1985 reads as 15 and 2011 reads as 41 on the 10-digit format.

  4. Contact Kohler for anything after 2011

    Reversible

No published rule for post-2011 Kohler engine serials could be confirmed during this review.

Questions about Decode a Kohler generator engine serial number

Why doesn't the leading digit just match the last two digits of the year?+

Kohler's own system is a running index across the years it covers rather than a two-digit calendar-year abbreviation, so the mapping shifts as the reference's own tables show, especially once the serial length itself changed.

Is this confirmed by Kohler's own current website?+

No current Kohler consumer-facing page stating this table directly was located during this review; the reference used here is Kohler-originated but hosted by a third party, which is why the evidence grade is B.

What about Kohler generators built after 2011?+

No published rule for that era could be confirmed. Kohler's own customer support, contacted with the engine serial number, is the more reliable path for a newer unit.

Where do I find the Kohler generator serial number?+

Look for the rating plate or label on the unit, on the generator's data plate. Photograph it before you start, since the label can be hard to read once the appliance is installed.
