Decode an LG appliance serial number: find the month and narrow the decade

An LG serial number starts with one digit for the year and two for the month, so it narrows the manufacture year only to a repeating 10-year cycle; a purchase date or manual date settles the decade.

LG appliance serial numbers carry a genuinely thinner date code than most other brands on this site: a single digit for the year, not a full two-digit year or a year letter, followed by two digits for the month. LG's own support article says the serial starts with three numbers, the first for the year of manufacture and the next two for the month, so the first numeric character is only the last digit of the year and the two after it are the month, from 01 through 12.

A serial containing 603 in that position therefore means March of a year ending in 6 — 2006, 2016 or 2026 — not a single determined year. Because one digit repeats every ten years, pick the decade with another clue, such as the appliance's known purchase date, installation history, the date printed on the owner's manual, or a feature that was only introduced in one of the candidate decades.

Try it

Decode your own serial number

It runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Enter at least four characters of the serial number to see an estimated manufacture date.

What this covers

  • LG major appliances whose serial number carries a single numeric digit for the year followed by two digits for the month
  • Narrowing the manufacture year to one of several candidate decades sharing the same final digit
  • Resolving the exact decade using an independent clue such as known purchase or installation date

What it does not cover

  • ×A single, determined manufacture year from the serial alone — the code only carries the final digit of the year
  • ×LG appliances whose serial does not fit this single-digit-year, two-digit-month pattern
  • ×Any single, determined year read from the serial alone

  1. Locate the serial label

    Reversible

Check the appliance's door frame, cabinet edge or rear panel depending on the type.

  2. Read the first numeric character as the last digit of the year

    Reversible

This narrows the year to a set of candidates sharing that final digit — for example, a 6 could mean 2006, 2016 or 2026.

  3. Read the next two digits as the month

    Reversible

    01 through 12. 03 means March.

  4. Use another clue to pick the decade

    Reversible

Known purchase date, installation records, or a feature introduced only in one candidate decade can resolve the ambiguity the serial alone cannot.

Questions about Decode an LG appliance serial number

Can I get the exact year from an LG serial number?+

An LG serial carries only the last digit of the year, so the code is ambiguous across every decade that shares that digit; the digit alone cannot say which one.

What does the manual's date add?+

The publication date printed on the owner's manual, and the model's launch year, fix the decade: a year digit of 6 on a model launched in 2015 means 2016, not 2006 or 2026.

How do I pick the right decade myself?+

Use an independent clue — the home's known appliance-purchase history, a receipt, or a feature that was only introduced in one of the candidate decades.

Where do I find the LG appliance serial number?+

Look for the rating plate or label on the unit, on the label inside the door or on the back. Photograph it before you start, since the label can be hard to read once the appliance is installed.
