If the thermostat does not follow the schedule, check that Home and Away is not overriding it, that the Home's time zone is correct, and that no manual temperature change is holding it. A manual change holds until the next schedule step. A routine in Google Home can set the thermostat at a time or when you say a phrase, but it needs the thermostat to be online and the routine to name it. If a routine does nothing, run it manually to see which step fails. Check the equipment: if the thermostat reports no heating after a command, the wiring or the furnace may not be responding, and the app's system test shows which.

Locations of family members' phones affect Away mode, and a phone with location off makes the thermostat think the home is empty. Keep your schedule simple, with two or three steps a day, and review it each season, because the temperatures you want change. A thermostat that is part of a smart home with other devices should not be given conflicting routines, such as one that sets heat and one that sets cool at the same time. If you use a voice assistant to change the temperature, remember that a voice change is a manual hold.

After a power cut, the schedule resumes when the thermostat reconnects. If the schedule is lost, set it again. It is wise to review the schedule after a time change or a season change, because temperatures that suit winter waste energy in spring. Use Eco temperatures for the hours when nobody is home, and test the Away behavior by leaving the house with your phone and checking that the thermostat switches within an hour. If someone's phone does not share location, the thermostat will treat the home as occupied by them.
