Garmin's notification articles split setup from display problems. Setup needs three places to agree: the phone, the Garmin Connect app and the watch. On an iPhone open Settings, Bluetooth, tap the info button beside your Garmin and turn on Share System Notifications; in Notifications set Show Previews to Always or When Unlocked, allow notifications and Notification Center for each app, and review Focus modes and any muted Messages contacts.
If notifications arrive but content is missing, Garmin says check the messaging app's preview setting, the phone's lock-screen settings and the watch's Privacy setting, which can be Off, Action or Gesture. If they arrive without alerting, check the During Activity, General Use and During Sleep settings, choose Show All on models that have them, and check any Focus mode on the watch and the settings in the Garmin Connect app. Garmin also says to confirm the watch is connected and not in a mode that disables Bluetooth.

Model-specific
What is true of this model and not of its siblings

- Garmin says settings vary by watch model, to check your owner's manual for Enabling Phone Notifications, and that some models are customized in the Garmin Connect app rather than on the watch.
- Focus modes
- Garmin says watches with Focus Modes set the general notification behavior there, so check them if alerts are silent.
- Repair cost
- Notification settings cost nothing. A watch that never vibrates after every setting is right is hardware, and WalkingSolar quotes about $50 to $80 for a Garmin battery replacement; Joe's Gaming and Electronics charges a $50 diagnostic fee if you decline a quote.
