GE dryer shows a vent, airflow or blockage warning

GE dryer shows a vent, airflow or blockage warning: treat a vent warning as measured airflow loss, not as a code to clear and ignore. Scoped to PFD95E*.

The GE Profile PFD95 tells you about airflow with lights. GE's troubleshooting table names a lint filter full light and a Check Vent light: the fixes are to clean the lint filter, make sure ducting is clean, free of kinks and unobstructed, check that the outside wall damper operates easily, inspect and clean the exhaust system, then dry a load on an automatic cycle and verify the light turns off. The installation chart gives the longest allowed exhaust for 4 inch rigid metal duct, 90 ft with no elbows and 25 ft with four.

Differential

Likely causes of “GE dryer shows a vent, airflow or blockage warning”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

Lint packed in the duct or the outside hood

What separates it The Check Vent light comes on and drying is long

How to confirm Vacuum the duct and clear the hood, and run the dryer again

  2. 2

    A kinked or crushed duct

What separates it Airflow drops after the dryer was moved or pushed back

How to confirm Straighten or replace the duct, and use rigid metal where possible

  3. 3

An exhaust run longer than the chart allows

What separates it The light came on from the first cycles after installation

How to confirm Compare with the exhaust length chart and shorten the run

  4. 4

The hood flaps stick or a nest blocks the duct

What separates it Little air leaves the hood because the hood flaps stick or a nest blocks the duct

How to confirm Check with a mirror that the flaps move freely and nothing is nesting

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • Whether the Check Vent light or the lint filter light is on
  • The duct type, length and number of elbows
  • Whether the outside damper opens easily when the dryer runs

Try in this order

0 of 5 completed
  1. Clean the lint filter

    Reversible

Pull it straight up and run your fingers across it. Wash it in warm soapy water if there is a waxy build-up, dry it thoroughly and replace it.

  2. Check the ducting

    Reversible

Make sure ducting is clean, free of kinks and unobstructed, and that the outside wall damper operates easily.

  3. Vacuum the duct

    Reversible

Unplug the dryer, disconnect the duct, vacuum it with the hose attachment and reconnect it. GE says to do this at least once a year because a partially clogged exhaust lengthens drying time.

  4. Check the hood

    Reversible

Use a mirror to check that the inside flaps of the hood move freely and that no birds or insects are nesting inside. Wall caps must be at least 12 inches from the ground.

  5. Run an automatic cycle

    Reversible

After cleaning, dry a load on an automatic cycle and verify the light turns off, as GE's table says.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Elbow rules in the chart
Any elbow greater than 45 degrees counts as a 90 degree elbow, one elbow of 45 degrees or less may be ignored, and two 45 degree elbows count as one 90 degree elbow. For every additional 90 degree elbow reduce the allowable vent length by 10 feet (3 m), and include the straight portions, elbows and transition duct in the total.

Stop boundary

When this stops being a self-service repair

  • !If the light stays on after cleaning the filter and duct, have the exhaust inspected by a qualified service person
  • !If there is a burning smell, stop using the dryer until the exhaust is cleared

Exact questions

Common questions

What does Check Vent mean on a GE dryer?+

Airflow is restricted: the lint filter, the ducting or the exhaust system may be blocked.

How do I clear the light?+

Clean the filter and exhaust, then dry a load on an automatic cycle and check that the light turns off.

What duct does GE specify?+

4 inch rigid metal duct. Flexible plastic or foil duct must not be used.

How long can the exhaust be?+

90 ft with no elbows on normal vent models, down to 25 ft with four elbows.

Do side and bottom exhausts count?+

Yes. Add one 90 degree elbow to the chart for side exhaust installations.

How high must the wall cap be?+

At least 12 inches (30.5 cm) from the ground.

Can I add a booster fan?+

GE's installation warnings do not allow it; follow the exhaust instructions exactly.

Who cleans the interior?+

Qualified service personnel, once a year.
