  A side-by-side fridge — freezer left, fridge right, full height each. Narrower compartments than a French door; wide items may not fit, which is the layout, not a fault.

• Cooling

• Ice and water
  An in-door ice maker and an external dispenser rely on a water line, a filter and a cold enough freezer. The in-door ice maker and its fill line are a common location for ice faults on a side-by-side.
• Why the fridge side warms
  A worn door gasket, a door held ajar, blocked vents on the freezer side or a dirty condenser coil underneath cause the fresh-food side to warm gradually. Clean the coil, and check that nothing blocks the vents.
• Smells
  A smell comes from spoiled food, a drain that is clogged with debris or a dirty drip pan, and sometimes from an old water filter. Find the source before trying an odor absorber.
• Food freezing in the fridge
  Food that freezes in the fridge side usually means the setting is too cold or cold air from the freezer is flowing in where food sits against the vents.
• Finding the model number
  The label is on the inside wall of the fresh-food compartment; GE lists the full model as GSS25GYPFS.
• Where to set the temperatures
  A fresh-food compartment at about 37 degrees Fahrenheit and a freezer at about 0 degrees keep food safe. Change a setting by a degree or two at a time and wait a day before judging the result.
• Door seals
  A gasket that has gone hard or has a gap lets warm air in. A sheet of paper closed in the door should resist being pulled out; if it slides easily, the seal needs cleaning or replacing.
