LG refrigerator door will not close or seal

LG refrigerator door will not close or seal: level, bin/shelf interference, hinge alignment and gasket condition determine the correction. Scoped to LRMVS3006*.

If a door on the LG LRMVS3006 will not close or pops open, LG's Parts & Features table has four causes: food packages blocking the door, bins, shelves or the crisper cover out of position, doors that were removed during installation and not replaced properly, and a refrigerator that is not level. Doors that are hard to open are usually dirty or sticky gaskets, or the one-minute vacuum after a door was just closed. Push the bins fully home, clear the door, then level the legs by turning them left to raise and right to lower.

Try in this order

0 of 5 completed
  1. Clear the door and push bins in

    Reversible

Rearrange food containers to clear the door and door shelves. Push bins all the way in and put the crisper cover, pans, shelves and baskets in their correct positions.

  2. Fold the mullion and try the door

    Reversible

Make sure the folding door mullion is folded in before you close the left-hand door. The auto-closing hinge pulls a door shut only when it is open less than 30 degrees.

  3. Level the refrigerator

    Reversible

Turn the front leveling legs with a flare nut or open-end wrench: left raises that side, right lowers it. If the doors do not close easily, tilt the unit slightly to the rear by turning both legs left the same amount.

  4. Clean the gaskets

    Reversible

Clean the gaskets and the surfaces they touch with a mild detergent, dry them, and rub a thin coat of appliance polish or kitchen wax on them, as LG suggests for doors that are hard to open.

  5. Wait a minute for the vacuum

    Reversible

LG says warm air entering when a door was recently opened cools and can create a vacuum. If the door is hard to open, wait one minute for pressure to equalise.

Exact questions

Common questions

Why does my LG refrigerator door pop open?+

LG lists food packages blocking the door, bins or shelves out of position, doors replaced wrongly after installation and an unlevel refrigerator.

Why is a door hard to open right after closing it?+

LG says warm air enters when you open the door, and as it cools it can create a vacuum. Wait one minute for the pressure to equalise.

How do I level the refrigerator?+

Turn the leveling leg left to raise that side, right to lower it. LG says it may take several turns, and to tilt slightly to the rear if the doors do not close easily.

What if the floor is not level?+

LG says it may be necessary to add shims under the leveling legs or rollers to complete installation.

How do the auto-closing hinges work?+

The doors and freezer drawers close automatically when pushed slightly, and a door only closes automatically when open at less than 30 degrees.

Why does the alarm sound?+

The door alarm sounds every 30 seconds if a door remains open longer than one minute.

Should I clean the gaskets?+

Yes. LG says dirty or sticky gaskets make doors hard to open. Clean them and rub on a thin coat of appliance polish or kitchen wax.

What is the folding door mullion?+

A center piece that keeps cold air in when the doors are closed. Fold it in before closing the left-hand door to avoid damage.
