LG refrigerator ice maker is not making ice

LG refrigerator ice maker is not making ice: freezer temperature, arm/bin state, water supply, filter and fill behavior should be proved first. Scoped to LRMVS3006*.

If the LG LRMVS3006 makes no ice, LG's manual lists the checks in order: the icemaker is not switched on, the refrigerator is not connected to water or the shutoff valve is closed, frost or debris is on the ice-detecting sensor, the shutoff arm or sensor is blocked, or a reverse osmosis system is dropping the water pressure. The Craft Ice maker also takes time: it starts about 48 hours after installation, and after the bin empties it can take up to 90 minutes for more ice and about 24 hours to refill.

Differential

Likely causes of “LG refrigerator ice maker is not making ice”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

The icemaker is switched off or the fridge was only just installed

What separates it The ice bin is empty on a new install and the icemaker switch is in the off position

How to confirm Find the icemaker ON/OFF and confirm it is on; allow 12 to 24 hours, up to 48 for Craft Ice

  2. 2

No water supply or a partly closed shutoff valve

What separates it The refrigerator makes a buzzing noise and the water dispenser also gives nothing

How to confirm Open the shutoff valve fully and check the supply line for kinks

  3. 3

Low house water pressure or a reverse osmosis system

What separates it Ice is small, slow or absent and water flows slowly

How to confirm Check the pressure is 20 to 120 psi, or 40 to 120 with a filter, and that an RO unit is not lowering it

  4. 4

Frost or debris on the ice-detecting sensor or shutoff arm

What separates it The bin looks empty but the icemaker never starts, or the arm cannot move freely

How to confirm Clean the sensor area and make sure the feeler arm moves freely or the sensors have a clear path

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • Whether the icemaker switch is on and when the refrigerator was installed
  • Whether the water dispenser works and whether the supply valve is fully open
  • Whether the freezer is at 0 F and whether the ice bin or sensor shows frost

  1. Check the icemaker switch

    Reversible

Locate the icemaker ON/OFF and turn it on. LG says a buzzing noise from time to time can happen if the icemaker is on with no water source attached, so turn it off if you have no water line.

  2. Check the water supply

    Reversible

Connect the refrigerator to the water supply and turn the shutoff valve fully open. LG says a kinked line, a clogged valve or low pressure all reduce or stop ice.

  3. Check the freezer temperature

    Reversible

LG says the recommended freezer temperature for normal ice production is 0 F (-18 C). A warmer freezer affects production, and the Ice Plus button can boost freezing for 24 hours.

  4. Clean the sensor and check the arm

    Reversible

Remove frost or foreign matter from the ice-detecting sensor. Make sure the shutoff arm moves freely, or that the two sensors have a clear path.

  5. Wait out the schedule

    Reversible

A new Craft Ice maker begins about 48 hours after installation. LG says after the bin is empty it may take up to 90 minutes before more ice is available and about 24 hours to fully refill.

Stop boundary

When this stops being a self-service repair

  • !If the icemaker is on, the water and pressure are right and the freezer is at 0 F but no ice appears after 48 hours, call LG customer service
  • !If water leaks from the supply line or the fill tube, close the valve and call LG or a plumber
  • !If a reverse osmosis system is the cause, contact a plumber about the water pressure

Exact questions

Common questions

Why is my LG icemaker not making ice?+

LG lists the icemaker being off, no water or a closed shutoff valve, an obstructed ice-detecting sensor or shutoff arm, and a reverse osmosis system among the causes.

How long does a new icemaker take to start?+

About 12 to 24 hours for the in-door icemaker, and LG says the Craft Ice maker begins producing ice about 48 hours after installation.

Why does my refrigerator buzz now and then?+

LG says this can happen if no water source is attached and the icemaker is turned on. Turn the icemaker off if there is no water line.

How much ice should it make?+

LG says the in-door icemaker makes 70 to 182 cubes in 24 hours, depending on temperatures and door openings. Craft Ice makes 3 round pieces per batch, or 6 in 6 ICE mode.

What water pressure does it need?+

20 to 120 psi (138 to 827 kPa) on models without a water filter and 40 to 120 psi (276 to 827 kPa) on models with one.

Can a water filter affect ice?+

Yes. LG says an exhausted water filter and small ice pieces both signal it is time to replace the filter, roughly every six months.

Why is the ice tray crooked?+

LG says the icemaker tray may look level or slightly tilted, and the change in position helps the freezing process.

Does a power cut affect ice?+

After a short outage the first batch takes longer and may not be round. For a long outage LG says to throw away the ice stored in the bin.
