Whirlpool refrigerator ice maker is not making ice

Whirlpool refrigerator ice maker is not making ice: freezer temperature, arm/bin state, water supply, filter and fill behavior should be proved first. Scoped to WRF757SDHZ.

If the Whirlpool WRF757SDHZ makes no ice, Whirlpool's guide lists eight causes in order: not connected to water or the shutoff valve is off, a kinked water line, the ice maker is not turned on, a new installation (wait 24 hours to begin and 3 days for full production), the door not closed, a large amount of ice recently removed, an ice cube jammed in the ice maker, and a filter that is clogged or incorrectly installed (remove it to test) or a reverse osmosis system. The ice maker should make about 3 pounds a day; Fast Ice increases it for 24 hours.

Differential

Likely causes of “Whirlpool refrigerator ice maker is not making ice”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

No water supply or a closed shutoff valve

What separates it There is no ice and no water at the dispenser because of no water supply or a closed shutoff valve

How to confirm Connect the refrigerator to the supply and turn the shutoff valve fully open

  2. 2

    The ice maker is off

What separates it The wire shutoff arm is up or the switch is in the OFF position

How to confirm Lower the wire arm or move the switch to ON, and make sure the bin is replaced

  3. 3

    A new installation

What separates it There is no ice for the first day or two because of a new installation

How to confirm Wait 24 hours for ice to begin and 3 days for full production; discard the first three batches

  4. 4

A clogged or incorrectly installed filter, or a kinked line

What separates it Low ice volume that improves with the filter removed

How to confirm Remove the filter to test; replace or reinstall it correctly and straighten the line

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • Whether the ice maker is on and the arm or switch position
  • Whether water reaches the dispenser when you press it
  • How long since installation and whether the filter is fitted

  1. Check the water

    Reversible

Make sure the refrigerator is connected to a water supply and the shutoff valve is fully open, and straighten any kink in the water source line.

  2. Turn the ice maker on

    Reversible

For an ice maker in the refrigerator compartment, push up the latch on the ice compartment door, open it and move the switch to the ON (left) position. For a freezer ice maker, lower the wire shutoff arm; the arm rises when the bin is full.

  3. Allow time

    Reversible

Allow 24 hours to produce the first batch, discard the first three batches and allow 2 to 3 days for the bin to fill completely.

  4. Test the filter

    Reversible

Remove the water filter and operate the ice maker. If ice volume improves, the filter may be clogged or incorrectly installed; replace it or reinstall it correctly.

  5. Free a jam

    Reversible

If an ice cube is jammed in the ice maker, remove it with a plastic utensil. Do not use anything sharp.

Ice maker styles
Style 1 has the ice maker on the ceiling of the refrigerator compartment on the left, ejecting cubes into a bin on the left-hand door, with an ON/OFF switch inside the ice compartment. Style 2 has the ice maker in the freezer with a wire shutoff arm that lifts as the bin fills. The sensor stops production automatically if the bin is full, the door is open or the bin is removed.

Exact questions

Common questions

How do I get more ice?+

Use Fast Ice from the Options, which raises production for 24 hours.

How long for the first ice?+

24 hours, then discard the first three batches.

Can I use a softened water supply?+

Avoid it. Water softener chemicals such as salt can damage the ice maker.

Can a reverse osmosis system matter?+

Yes, it can decrease water pressure; the minimum pressure from the RO system is 40 to 60 psi.

Can ice clump?+

Humidity makes ice clump; break it up with a plastic utensil, not sharp tools.
