Whirlpool refrigerators: temperature, ice and filters

A warm refrigerator needs its vents, shelves, coils and door seal checked. An ice maker needs the supply valve, the filter and the freezer temperature checked. A leak at the dispenser often follows a filter change that was not fully seated. Noise may be the compressor or the defrost cycle.

The label is inside the fresh food compartment and shows the model and serial. Whirlpool's support asks for both. Replace the filter on schedule and vacuum the coils.

A Whirlpool refrigerator that is warm in the fresh food section but cold in the freezer often has an airflow problem, because the cold air is made in the freezer and moved by a fan and a damper. Look for frost over the vents in the freezer, check that the fan runs when the door is closed and make sure that food does not block the air return. A frosted evaporator cover may mean a defrost fault, which is a service job, but clearing the vents and defrosting by unplugging for a day is a first step.

Door seals are easy to test: close a sheet of paper in the door and pull it out. If it slides out with no resistance, the gasket is not sealing. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water, and check that the refrigerator is level and tilts a little backward so that the doors close by themselves. A gasket that is torn or hardened can be replaced by the owner on most models, and the part is listed by the model number.

If the ice maker makes small or hollow cubes, the water pressure is low or the filter is blocked. Replace the filter, check the line and wait a day to see an effect. A noisy ice maker may be trying to fill with no water.

Whirlpool makes refrigerators in French-door, side-by-side and top-freezer layouts, and the directory lists the models that have a guide. As with any refrigerator, the layout sets the likely faults: an ice maker and a dispenser add a water filter and a fill line, and a two-door French-door model adds a seal that can curl. The guides start with the checks that cost nothing, such as the temperature setting, the door seals and the vents.

A refrigerator that is warm, noisy or leaking is usually telling you about airflow, ice or the water line. Clean the condenser coils twice a year, change the water filter every six months and keep the vents clear, and the common faults become much less likely.
