iRobot Roomba robot vacuum keeps stopping, pulsing or shutting off

iRobot Roomba robot vacuum keeps stopping, pulsing or shutting off: blockage protection, dirty filters, battery temperature and motor overheating are common boundaries. Scoped to j9, j9+.

A Roomba j9 that stops mid-job is telling you something: it plays an audio alert and turns the light ring red. Press the Clean button or tap the bumper to hear the detail, and check the iRobot Home App. After 90 minutes of inactivity off the charging station the robot ends its cleaning job by itself. Common physical causes in the guide are a filter not installed correctly (it will not run), a full bin, a clogged front caster wheel and dirty sensors. When the bin is full the ring sweeps red toward the rear; return to the Clean Base to empty it.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Standby, storage and reset
To reduce power use when the robot is idle, remove the dust bin and tap Clean five times for reduced power standby, and to exit place it on the charging station and tap Clean. For long-term storage remove it from the station and hold Clean for 3 seconds with one wheel off the ground, which turns the battery off, and store it in a cool, dry place. To factory reset, remove the bin and hold Clean for 7 seconds until a sound plays, then press Clean once more to confirm. After 90 minutes off the charging station with no activity the robot ends its job.
Cleaning the brushes and wheel
For the multi-surface brushes, pinch the brush frame release tab, lift it and remove any obstructions, then take out the brushes and pull off the caps at each end so you can clear the hair beneath. Clean the square and hexagonal pegs on the opposite side and refit the brushes by matching the peg shapes to the icons in the cleaning head module. For the front caster wheel, pull the module off, pull the wheel from its housing, clear the cavity and click it back in; iRobot warns a clogged front wheel can damage your floor, and if it will not spin freely afterwards to contact Customer Care.
