iRobot Roomba robot vacuum robot vacuum gets lost, stuck or misses rooms

iRobot Roomba robot vacuum robot vacuum gets lost, stuck or misses rooms: lighting, sensors, map state, floor transitions and environmental traps matter more than repeated factory resets. Scoped to j9, j9+.

The Roomba j9 navigates with Precision Vision Navigation, which avoids obstacles in real time, and it builds smart maps in the iRobot Home App to tell it where and when to clean. iRobot's guide says to remove excess clutter from floors before cleaning, keep the camera window clean and inspected monthly, wipe sensors monthly and keep the dock clear. A dirty camera window or sensors, clutter and a clogged front caster wheel are the checks. If it seems lost, clean the camera window and sensors with a dry cloth and let it explore again; use the app to review the map.

Navigation and setup
The iRobot Home App sets the robot up, and iRobot describes Precision Vision Navigation that avoids obstacles in real time, smart maps that tell it where and when to clean and automatic cleaning schedules and preferences. Remove excess clutter from floors before cleaning, and use the robot frequently to keep floors well conditioned. To end a job and send the robot to its charging station hold Clean for 2 to 5 seconds. Wipe the camera window, sensors and charging contacts with a clean, dry cloth once a month and never spray liquid on them.
Caring for the Clean Base
Once a month inspect the visual docking target and the charging contacts and wipe them with a clean, dry cloth, never spraying cleaner on the sensors or their openings. Also once a month remove lint and debris from the blower cover inside the canister and wipe it dry. Do not place the Clean Base in direct sunlight, keep the area around it clear of clutter to improve docking, and keep it at least 4 feet (1.2 m) from stairs so the robot cannot fall. The dock has a thermal protector that stops its motor if it overheats; unplug it, let it cool for 30 minutes, clear the port and tube and plug it back in.
