Electrolux ELFW7637 front-load washer fills with water while turned off

Electrolux ELFW7637 front-load washer fills with water while turned off: water entering an idle washer points to an inlet valve that is not sealing or drain-water backflow. Scoped to ELFW7637A*.

Electrolux's own manual says a standpipe that is too low lets water flow through the washer: water enters but the tub does not fill when the drain hose standpipe is too low, and it must be a minimum of 23.6 in (60 cm) high to prevent siphoning; the maximum is 8 ft (2.4 m). Increase the standpipe height to at least 23.6 in per the installation sections. The reversed-hose alarm HO followed by SE is a different thing: it warns that the hot supply is on the cold inlet and the cold supply on the hot inlet. If water keeps coming in with the faucets closed, shut off both valves and contact Electrolux.

Likely causes of “Electrolux ELFW7637 front-load washer fills with water while turned off”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

A standpipe below the minimum height

What separates it Water enters but the tub does not fill because the standpipe is below the minimum height

How to confirm Raise the standpipe to at least 23.6 in (60 cm)

  2. 2

    A standpipe above the maximum

What separates it The washer drains poorly because the standpipe is above the maximum

How to confirm Reduce it to less than 8 ft (2.4 m)

  3. 3

    Reversed inlet hoses

What separates it HO then SE shows on the LED because the inlet hoses are reversed

How to confirm Shut off the valves and attach each hose to the correct inlet

  4. 4

    A stuck inlet valve

What separates it Water enters with the faucets on and the washer off

How to confirm Close the faucets and contact Electrolux service, since the inlet valve is stuck

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • The height of the standpipe above the floor
  • Whether HO SE showed on the LED
  • Whether water enters with the washer off

  1. Close the faucets

    Reversible

Close the faucets, by shutting both valves and watching the level in the drum, and then test again to see whether it helped.

  2. Measure the standpipe

    Reversible

Measure the standpipe, which should be at least 23.6 in and no more than 8 ft.

  3. Check the hoses

    Reversible

Hot supply to the hot inlet and cold to the cold; HO SE means they are reversed.

  4. Check the drain hose

    Reversible

Check the drain hose, which must not be kinked or clogged, and then test again to see whether it helped.

  5. Test with a short cycle

    Reversible

Test with a short cycle, and watch a fill and a drain, and then test again to see whether it helped.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Reversed Hose Detection
If the washer detects that the inlet hoses have been installed incorrectly, hot supply to the cold inlet and cold supply to the hot inlet, the LED displays HO followed by SE and then the remaining cycle time for 60 seconds and repeats. Acknowledge it by pressing Cancel, shut off each water supply valve and attach each hose to the correct inlet. Incorrect wash and rinse temperatures come with the HOSE alarm.
Water supply
Electrolux says water pressure must be at least 30 psi (260 kPa), the hot water heater should deliver at least 120 F (49 C), and using water elsewhere in the house while the washer fills can slow it. Remove the hoses and clean the inlet screens if they are plugged, and connect the hot hose to the hot faucet and the cold hose to the cold faucet.
