GE GFW850 front-load washer shakes, walks or bangs during spin

GE GFW850 front-load washer shakes, walks or bangs during spin: load balance, shipping hardware, cabinet level and floor stiffness should be proved before suspension or drive repair. Scoped to GFW850S*.

A GE GFW850 that shakes or walks across the floor on the spin is being pushed off balance by something the washer cannot correct for. This 5.0 cubic foot front-loader has Dynamic Balancing Technology, which measures an uneven load and adjusts so that the drum spins steadily, and that makes shaking less common than on older machines. When it does shake, the usual reasons are outside the drum:

The checks in more detail

a floor that is not level or rigid, shipping packing left in, a very small or single-item load, or a worn suspension part. Start with the stand. Place a spirit level on top and adjust the four feet until the washer is level both ways; press on each corner to check it does not rock, and tighten the lock nuts. A raised pedestal or a springy wooden floor increases vibration, and an anti-vibration pad under each foot or a plywood sheet helps.

On a new or moved washer, confirm the shipping bolts and the base packing are removed, because the drum cannot float with them in place. Then the load. One heavy item, such as a bath mat or a pair of wet jeans, can overwhelm even a good balancing system, as can a load of one or two pieces. Add a few small items to even it out. Do not overfill the drum, and avoid washing a single bulky item.

If the shaking comes with long pauses and repeated attempts to spin, the washer is trying to rebalance. If the washer is level, loaded sensibly and the packing is out, and the drum still shakes or knocks, a worn shock absorber or suspension spring may be the cause, which a technician diagnoses. Check the drum for a coin or other object by turning it by hand with the door open and listen for scraping.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Dynamic Balancing
The washer measures an unbalanced load and adjusts the drum speed and water so the spin stays steady. It works well within limits.
Floor first
A concrete floor is steadiest. A wooden floor flexes, and a plywood sheet or pads reduce the movement.
Packing
Shipping bolts and base foam hold the drum for transport. Left in, they cause banging and can damage the washer.
Small loads
A load of one or two items cannot balance, so add a few small items.
Shock absorbers
They damp the tub's movement; wear lets the tub strike the cabinet.
