GE PFW950 front-load washer does not dispense detergent, bleach or softener correctly

GE PFW950 front-load washer does not dispense detergent, bleach or softener correctly: wrong product, dose, drawer parts, low pressure and leveling can imitate a failed dispenser. Scoped to PFW950S*.

The GE Profile PFW950 has a dispenser drawer with a detergent compartment that has a Powder or Liquid flap selector, a liquid bleach compartment, a fabric softener compartment, and, on models with it, the Adaptive SmartDispense tank that adds detergent for you. GE's manual and support article give the fixes for a dispenser that is not dispensing: pull the drawer out until it stops and lift the front to remove it, wash it in warm soapy water with mild detergent, rinse it, and press the siphon caps fully back into place after cleaning. Never put detergent packets in the drawer; put them directly in the wash basket. If nothing dispenses at all after cleaning, GE recommends service.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

SmartDispense in numbers
With AUTO selected, GE says the washer dispenses approximately 1.5 oz of detergent for an 8 lb normal load and adjusts in proportion. LESS reduces the amount by 40 percent, useful for concentrated detergent or very soft water; MORE adds 40 percent for heavily soiled loads. If the SmartDispense light flashes the tank is estimated to be too low for the load and the washer can still run, but you should refill it or add detergent by hand.
Bleach and softener limits
Measure liquid bleach at not more than 1/3 cup (80 ml) and keep it below the maximum fill line; GE recommends HE bleach in this front-load washer and warns overfilling can dispense bleach early and damage clothes. Use only liquid fabric softener and do not pour it directly on the load; the softener compartment is siphoned in the final rinse.
