Haier HLC1700 washer/dryer combo shakes, walks or bangs during spin

Haier HLC1700 washer/dryer combo shakes, walks or bangs during spin: load balance, shipping hardware, cabinet level and floor stiffness should be proved before suspension or drive repair. Scoped to HLC1700A*.

Haier's article for a washer that vibrates or walks says to check two things, and the manual adds the rest for the HLC1700AXW: the drum must not be overfilled (fill to 75% capacity only), the unit must be level with all four legs supporting weight, the shipping bolts must be removed, pockets must be empty and the load must be evenly distributed. The manual's troubleshooting table lists an improperly unlocked drum at installation, coins and heavy objects, unadjusted support feet and an uneven load as the four causes of noise and shaking. Unb on the screen is the unit's own unbalanced-load message.

  1. Check the shipping bolts

    Reversible

Check the shipping bolts, and confirm that the transportation bolts were removed as the installation section shows.

  2. Level all four legs

    Reversible

Level all four legs, since all four must support weight, so adjust the feet and tighten the locking nuts.

  3. Reduce the fill

    Reversible

Reduce the fill, since the drum should be filled to 75 percent capacity only, and half full for drying.

  4. Balance the load

    Reversible

Balance the load, by distributing the clothing evenly around the drum, and then test again to see whether it helped.

  5. Test a spin

    Reversible

Test a spin, by running a spin at low speed first, and watching the unit.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Moving the unit
For a move the manual says to unplug the cord, turn off the taps, disconnect the hoses and place them in the tub, snap the drain hose into the clips on the back, retract the adjustable feet by loosening the locking nuts and threading them in, and reinstall the transportation bolts with rubber grommets and plastic spacers behind the back plate. Reverse this on arrival.
75 percent and half loads
Haier's rule of thumb is to fill the drum to 75 percent of its capacity for washing and only half full when the Drying option is used, so the clothes can tumble freely. A load that fills the drum is the commonest reason for a heavy unit like this, at 160.6 lb, to start walking during the spin.
Sorting and unbalance
Unb on the screen is the unit's own unbalanced-load message. Haier's cure is to spin at low speed and cancel drying, then redistribute the clothing evenly in the basket. Mixed loads, such as one heavy work jacket with light blouses, are the commonest cause, so the manual's advice not to mix heavy clothes with light ones is also an anti-vibration rule.
