Haier HLC1700 washer/dryer combo shows excessive suds, SUD or Sd behavior

Haier HLC1700 washer/dryer combo shows excessive suds, SUD or Sd behavior: excess or non-HE detergent can extend the cycle, suppress spin and cause drain errors. Scoped to HLC1700A*.

Suds in a Haier HLC1700AXW have a specific consequence in Haier's manual: excess suds prevent the complete rinsing of detergent residue from clothes, soap build-up reduces washer performance, and damage can occur if soap suds get into areas such as the condensing dryer compartment. Use only High Efficiency detergent, which is formulated to avoid too many suds, and measure it for the load size, the soil level and the water softness. Oversudsing and low cleaning performance are listed together, and the fix is one word: use HE detergent.

Likely causes of “Haier HLC1700 washer/dryer combo shows excessive suds, SUD or Sd behavior”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

    Too much detergent

What separates it There are suds and soap residue on the clothes because too much detergent was used

How to confirm Measure for load size, soil and water softness; use less

  2. 2

Powdered softener or wrong product in a compartment

What separates it There is residue and there are suds because a powdered softener or a wrong product was in a compartment

How to confirm Use liquid softener only, below the max fill mark

What separates it The suds keep returning because of detergent build up in the drawer or the drum

  1. Switch to HE detergent

    Reversible

Switch to HE detergent, which means only HE and low sudsing detergent should be used in the unit.

  2. Measure

    Reversible

Measure the detergent, since the right amount depends on the load size, the soil level and the water softness.

  3. Rinse

    Reversible

Rinse the suds away, by adding Ex Rinse so that the residue rinses out of the clothes.

  4. Clean the drawer

    Reversible

Clean the drawer, by removing the insert and rinsing it, and dry it before refitting.

  5. Run Clean Washer

    Reversible

Run Clean Washer, with no clothes in the drum, to remove the build up that causes suds.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Why suds matter on a combo
On a combination unit the dryer condenses moisture inside the same cabinet as the drum, so Haier warns that damage can occur if soap suds get into areas of the machine like the condensing dryer compartment. That is why the manual repeats HE detergent in its dispenser section, its troubleshooting table and its label on the unit.
Options that help clear suds
When suds are a problem the Ex Rinse option adds rinsing, and the Presoak and Prewash options change how detergent is used: with Prewash selected only powdered HE detergent should go in both the prewash and main wash compartments, because liquid detergent flows straight into the drum and doubles the dose during the first wash.
Softener and residue
The softener compartment takes liquid softener only, not above the max fill mark, and powdered softener must never be used because it does not dissolve and clogs the dispenser. A clogged or overfilled softener compartment overflows into the drawer and can look like suds, so check the fill mark and the insert before deciding it is the detergent.
Where the suds go
With HE detergent used correctly the unit makes little foam, because it fills to a small water level and tumbles the load. A foam problem that appears suddenly after months of normal use points to a product change, a bigger dose than usual or a build-up in the drawer insert rather than a fault in the unit, and Haier lists none of the F or E codes for suds.
