Kenmore's own guide describes suds on the Kenmore Elite 796 front-loader as an error with an automatic response: if the washer detects too many suds it displays an error and adds a Suds Reducing cycle, which adds about two hours to the cycle time, and if too many suds are detected during spinning the washer stops to help prevent leaking. The fix: do not add more than the manufacturer's recommended amount of detergent, and to remove suds turn the washer off and on and run the Rinse & Spin cycle. HE detergent is required; using detergent that is not HE may cause oversudsing and unsatisfactory performance which could result in error codes, cycle failure and machine damage. Excessive sudsing in the top-loader is from too much or incorrect detergent.
Differential
Likely causes of “Kenmore 796-series front-load washer shows excessive suds, SUD or Sd behavior”, and how to tell them apart
- 1
Too much detergent
What separates it The suds error and a Suds Reducing cycle show because too much detergent was used
How to confirm Use only the recommended amount, and measure it
- 2
Non-HE detergent
What separates it There is oversudsing and there are error codes because non HE detergent was used
How to confirm Use only detergent with the HE logo, and measure it
- 3
Concentrated detergent at a normal dose
What separates it There are suds in soft water because a concentrated detergent was used at a normal dose
How to confirm Use less; even a little extra causes problems
- 4
Residue in the washer
What separates it The suds keep returning because of residue in the washer
How to confirm Run CLEAN WASHER regularly, to clear the residue
- 5
Top-loader (796.3143): non-HE or too much detergent
What separates it Heavy suds fill the tub and rinse performance drops
How to confirm Use only detergent marked HE and the amount the maker recommends for the load and soil
- 6
Top-loader (796.3143): detergent added on top of the load or the drawer overfilled
What separates it Suds appear early and softener or bleach release too soon
How to confirm Use the dispensers and do not overfill compartments
Before you touch a setting
Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence
- Whether the suds error showed on the display
- Whether it happened during the spin
Try in this order
0 of 7 completedTurn off and on
ReversibleTurn off and on, to reset the suds condition, and let the washer rinse, and then test again to see whether it helped.
Run Rinse & Spin
ReversibleRun Rinse and Spin, with no detergent, to clear the suds, and then test again to see whether it helped.
Use HE detergent only
ReversibleUse HE detergent only, in the manufacturer's amount for the load, and then test again to see whether it helped.
Use less for soft water
ReversibleUse less for soft water, or for light soil or small loads, and then test again to see whether it helped.
Run CLEAN WASHER
ReversibleRun CLEAN WASHER regularly, to clear the residue that makes suds, and then test again to see whether it helped.
Switch to HE detergent
ReversibleKenmore says HE detergents are formulated for high-efficiency washers and contain suds-reducing agents, so use only detergent with the HE logo, and use less if the load is small, lightly soiled or the water is soft.
Remove the suds
ReversibleTo clear suds turn the washer off and on, then run the Rinse & Spin cycle without adding detergent. Do not add more detergent, and next time measure carefully and never exceed the manufacturer's maximum amount.
Model-specific
What is true of this model and not of its siblings
- Detergent measuring
- On the top-loader Kenmore says the normal amount of HE detergent for average loads is less than half of the recommended maximum, less again for soft water, light soil or small loads, and never more than the maximum. Measure with the maker's own device; a splash from the bottle is usually too much for a front-loader.
- Suds and warranty
- Kenmore's warranty does not cover damage or failure caused by the use of detergents, cleaners, chemicals or utensils other than those recommended in the instructions, so a washer damaged by non-HE detergent may not be covered. That is one more reason to use only HE detergent in the measured amount.
- Cleaning up after suds
- After a suds event, run the CLEAN WASHER cycle and wipe around and under the door seal, since residue left by oversudsing feeds musty odors and further suds. Clean the dispenser drawer of built-up detergent, and check that only detergent with the HE logo is in the house. If you use several detergents, one of them may be the non-HE product that keeps triggering the suds error.
- Measuring detergent
- Today's detergents are formulated to work without visible sudsing. Read the maker's recommended amount, use less for soft water or small loads, and use only low-sudsing HE detergent. Too much detergent gives poor wash and rinse performance and can contribute to odors.
