Whirlpool WFW9620 front-load washer will not spin or leaves clothes soaking wet

Whirlpool WFW9620 front-load washer will not spin or leaves clothes soaking wet: a washer normally refuses full-speed spin when it has not drained, cannot balance the load or cannot prove the door is locked. Scoped to WFW9620H*.

If a Whirlpool WFW9620 does not spin or leaves a wet load, Whirlpool's Product Help lists eight things to check: whether Low or No Spin was selected (Drain & Spin removes extra water; cycle settings are remembered from the last run); whether a Delicate or Hand Wash cycle was chosen, since these spin slower on purpose; HE detergent, because suds slow the spin; a single bulky item that needs others to balance it; an overloaded, tightly packed drum; whether the washer is level; the drain hose (4.5 in in the pipe, standpipe 39 in to 96 in, no kinks); and F7 E1, a motor speed sensing error where shipping bolts left in or an overload stop the motor reaching speed.

Differential

Likely causes of “Whirlpool WFW9620 front-load washer will not spin or leaves clothes soaking wet”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

Low or No Spin remembered from the last run

What separates it The load is wet after the cycle because Low or No Spin is remembered from the last run

How to confirm Select Drain & Spin or a higher spin speed

  2. 2

A Delicate or Hand Wash cycle

What separates it The spin is slower by design because a Delicate or Hand Wash cycle was chosen

How to confirm Use a normal cycle if the fabric allows

  3. 3

    An unbalanced or overloaded load

What separates it The spin speed is reduced and the clothes are wet because the load is unbalanced or overloaded

How to confirm Wash multiple items together, and load the drum loosely

  4. 4

Shipping bolts or an overload (F7 E1)

What separates it The motor cannot reach speed because of shipping bolts or an overload, shown as F7 E1

How to confirm Remove all shipping bolts and reduce the load

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • The cycle and the spin speed that you chose
  • Whether F7 E1 showed on the display
  • Whether the load was a single bulky item

Try in this order

0 of 5 completed
  1. Check the spin setting

    Reversible

Check the spin setting, since the cycle settings are remembered, so re enable spin if it was disabled.

  2. Balance the load

    Reversible

Balance the load, by adding items to a single bulky piece and avoiding tight packing.

  3. Level the washer

    Reversible

Level the washer, since it must be level or the load unbalances, and then test again to see whether it helped.

  4. Check the drain hose

    Reversible

Check the drain hose, which is 4.5 in maximum in the pipe, with a standpipe of 39 in to 96 in, and not kinked.

  5. Clear F7 E1

    Reversible

Remove shipping bolts, reduce the load and press Pause or Cancel twice and Power once.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Balance and single items
Whirlpool says washing single items can be hard to balance and can extend the cycle, so wash multiple items rather than individual ones. A large unbalanced load may lead to a reduced spin speed, longer cycle times and possibly wet clothes at the end of the cycle; adding a few more items usually restores the spin.
Remembered settings
Whirlpool notes that cycle settings are remembered from the last time a cycle was run and are recalled when that cycle is selected again. If a Heavy Duty cycle was last run without spin, the next Heavy Duty run has its spin disabled until you switch it back on. On a touch-panel washer like the WFW9620 this is the quickest explanation for a load that comes out dripping when nothing is broken.
