Apple MacBook Air camera or microphone is not working in calls

Apple MacBook Air (M2, M3 and M4) camera or microphone is not working in calls: privacy permission, physical shutter/mute, one app, device selection and hardware should be separated. Scoped to 2022 M2, 2024 M3 and 2025 M4 in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes.

If the camera or microphone does not work on a MacBook Air, check the permission before the hardware: in System Settings, Privacy and Security, open Camera and Microphone and make sure the app is allowed. The camera light shows when it is in use. Quit and reopen the app, check that the right camera and microphone are selected inside it, and restart. The M2 and M3 Airs have a 1080p FaceTime HD camera and the M4 Air has a 12 MP Center Stage camera that also supports Desk View; Center Stage can look like a zoomed or moving picture, which is a feature, not a fault.

Exact questions

Common questions

Why does my Air camera look zoomed in or follow me?+

The M4 Air's Center Stage keeps you in frame by cropping and panning. Turn it off in the video controls if you do not want it.

Is there a camera light on a MacBook Air?+

Yes, a green light beside the camera comes on when the camera is in use.

Why can't an app use my microphone?+

The app may not be allowed in Privacy and Security, or another input may be selected.

Can I use Desk View on any Air?+

Desk View is a feature of the M4 Air's Center Stage camera, not the older cameras.

Why is my video call picture dark or grainy on the Air?+

The camera relies on room light, so face a window or a lamp and turn on Video Effects such as Studio Light or portrait lighting if the app supports them.

Can I turn off the Air's camera?+

There is no switch, but you can deny every app access in Privacy and Security, Camera, and the green light tells you when it is in use.

Why does the microphone pick up fans or keys?+

The built-in three-microphone array uses beamforming, but it still hears typing; use Voice Isolation in the Mic Mode menu during calls, or a headset.
