Troubleshooting a Mac, MacBook or iMac
Apple's Macs fall into two groups: Apple silicon (M1 and later) and Intel. Apple menu, About This Mac shows which, and the fixes differ: on Apple silicon you hold the power button for startup options and use Apple Configurator to revive firmware, while on Intel you use key combinations at startup. Storage, battery drain and display faults each have their own page for the models covered here.
Back up with Time Machine before any reinstall, and run Apple Diagnostics for hardware faults.
