HP laptops will not charge

HP laptops (Spectre, ENVY, Pavilion Plus, OmniBook, EliteBook, ProBook, Victus and OMEN) will not charge: adapter wattage, cable, port/dock, battery temperature and firmware should be separated. Scoped to Spectre x360 14-eu, ENVY x360 14-fa, Pavilion Plus 14-ey, OmniBook Ultra 14, EliteBook 840 G11, ProBook 440 G11, Victus 16-r and OMEN Transcend 14.

If the Spectre x360 14 will not charge, test the charging chain in order: wall outlet, HP adapter, cable and the USB-C or charging port. The Spectre charges over USB-C, so a worn cable or an underpowered charger shows up as Plugged in, not charging, or a very slow charge. Check the battery icon and Settings, System, Power and battery, try the other USB-C port, and use HP's adapter or another Power Delivery charger that matches the laptop's wattage. Update the BIOS and the battery driver with HP Support Assistant, and run the battery test in HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.

    Reversible

Install the latest BIOS from HP Support Assistant, since BIOS updates include battery and charging fixes.

  8. Unplug accessories

    Reversible

Disconnect docks and hubs and charge directly from the adapter to remove variables.

If the adapter has a light, check it comes on when plugged in; no light points to the adapter or the outlet.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

USB-C charging
The Spectre charges over USB-C Power Delivery, so a quality cable matters.
Battery care
HP offers battery care options that limit the charge level to extend battery life.
Safety
Do not use a charger that is hot, damaged or not rated for the laptop.
Battery report
Run powercfg /batteryreport in a Command Prompt and compare design capacity with full-charge capacity to see whether the battery is worn.
Wattage
Use an adapter that meets or exceeds the wattage printed on the original; a smaller one charges slowly or not at all under load.

Exact questions

Common questions

What wattage does the Spectre x360 14 need?+

Use the HP adapter supplied or a USB-C Power Delivery charger of the wattage on the original; a smaller charger may charge slowly.

Why does the Spectre say plugged in, not charging?+

The charger may be too weak, or battery care may be holding the charge. Try the original adapter.

Can I charge it from either USB-C port?+

Check which ports support charging; many Spectre models charge from both Thunderbolt ports.

Is it safe to leave the Spectre plugged in?+

Yes, though battery care settings can limit the charge level to extend battery life.

How can I check the battery's condition on the Spectre?+

Run a battery report with powercfg /batteryreport from a Command Prompt to compare design capacity and full-charge capacity.

Why does the Spectre charge more slowly while I use it?+

Heavy work uses power while charging, so the battery rises slowly. Close demanding apps or use a stronger charger.

Does HP have a battery test?+

Yes. HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI, opened with F2 at startup, includes a battery test.

Can a BIOS update fix charging problems?+

Sometimes. HP releases BIOS updates that improve battery management, so install the latest through HP Support Assistant.

Is a USB-C hub able to charge the Spectre?+

Only if it supports Power Delivery at a sufficient wattage; otherwise charge directly from the adapter.

Can I replace the Spectre's battery myself?+

The Spectre's battery is built in, and HP says service should be done by HP or an authorized provider, so do not open the base yourself.

Why does the charge light behave oddly?+

The light shows charging or full state, and a blinking light can mean a charger or battery problem. Check HP's guide for your model's light meanings.

Why does the Spectre charge only to a certain percentage?+

Battery care or a power setting may be capping the charge. Check the battery settings and HP's battery care option.

Can a Thunderbolt dock charge the Spectre?+

Yes, if the dock supplies enough Power Delivery wattage and you use the dock's own cable; otherwise charge directly from the adapter.

Why does the Spectre drain even when plugged in?+

A heavy load can use more power than a weak charger supplies. Use the original adapter and close demanding apps.

What does a charging notification in Windows mean?+

Windows may say Plugged in, not charging when the charger is below the needed wattage or when battery care is on.

Is a slow charge a sign the battery is dying?+

Not necessarily; a weak charger or cable is the commoner reason. A battery that holds little charge shows low capacity in the battery report.

Why does the Spectre charge when it is off but not when it is on?+

A heavy load can use as much power as the charger supplies, so the percentage stays flat or falls while you work. Close demanding apps, use the original adapter, or let it charge while idle.

What does it mean when the HP charging light is amber?+

Amber usually means the battery is charging and white means full, but meanings differ by model. HP's support page for your Spectre lists the light states; a flashing light often points to a charger or battery fault.

Should I let the Spectre battery run flat before charging?+

No. Lithium-ion batteries last longer when not drained to zero, so charge it when convenient and use HP's battery care setting if you keep it plugged in.

How do I know whether the charger or the laptop is at fault?+

Test the charger on another laptop that uses USB-C Power Delivery, or test the Spectre with another adapter of the same wattage. The part that fails on the second test is the faulty one.
