Rheem tankless water heaters: reading the remote display codes

A Rheem tankless water heater heats water only while water flows, and it reports a problem as a number on its remote control display. Most codes name one of a few parts: the flame rod and igniter that light and prove the burner, the gas control valve, the blower and the vent, the water flow and temperature sensors, and the control itself. The first step for any code is the same: turn on a hot water faucet and recheck the display, since some codes clear on their own once water flows again.

Two codes on this list describe the same gas control valve fault. Code 51 and code 80 are both listed by Rheem's pocket manual as a gas control valve malfunction in which the unit detected flame when demand for hot water ended and the unit turned off, so the first steps are the same for either one: turn off the gas at the shut-off valve, switch the heater off and call for service. Give the technician the exact code that your remote control display showed, since the two numbers can appear on different generations of the controller.

Codes that point to the gas supply, the vent or the flame rod are not do-it-yourself repairs, and a smell of gas means leaving the house and calling the gas company. A lime build-up code is different: it asks for the heat exchanger to be flushed, which a plumber or an informed owner can do with the right kit. Keep the model and serial numbers from the label ready when you call, and write down any code before you reset the heater.

What do I do first when a Rheem tankless heater shows a code?

Turn on a hot water faucet and recheck the display. If the code stays, turn off the faucet and the heater, unplug it for about 30 seconds, plug it back in and follow the chart for your code.

Are codes 51 and 80 the same?

Rheem's pocket manual lists both as a gas control valve malfunction in which flame was detected after demand ended, so they take the same first steps.
