Every York YP9C modulating gas furnace code: what it means and what to do

York YP9C modulating gas furnace code 1-red-flash-flame-present-gas-valve-off

Flame is present with no power being supplied to the gas valve.

Note that the burners are lit or glowing when the furnace is not calling for heat.

York's manual says this can be caused by a gas valve that is slow to close or that leaks gas through to the burners. That is a gas-valve problem for a technician, and gas at the burners is a stop condition.

York YP9C modulating gas furnace code 10-red-flashes-gas-valve-circuit-shorted

Gas valve circuit shorted.

Note that the furnace will not run and that the code is steady across restarts.

York's manual says to check the gas valve wiring, and if the wiring is correct, to replace the gas valve. Gas-valve work belongs to a licensed technician.

York YP9C modulating gas furnace code 11-red-flashes-main-blower-failure

Main blower failure. The code occurs when the main limit opens and fails to reclose within 5 minutes, indicating that the blower motor or blower wheel has failed.

Listen for the blower and check that the filter is not blocking airflow.

York's manual attributes this to a failed blower motor or blower wheel. Replacing either is technician work.

York YP9C modulating gas furnace code 12-red-flashes-id-plug-missing

The ID plug is not present or not connected properly.

Note whether the furnace was recently serviced or the control board was recently replaced.

York's manual says to check for a loose plug or loose wires in the plug. The ID plug sets the model settings for the control, so a technician should confirm the correct plug for the furnace.

York YP9C modulating gas furnace code 2-red-flashes-pressure-switch-closed

Pressure switch closed with inducer pressure below the pressure switch setpoint: the switch is closed when it should be open.

Note that the code appears at the start of a heating call.

York's manual says to check the pressure switch and the pressure transducer. Both are safety and sensing parts, so testing them belongs to a technician.

York YP9C modulating gas furnace code 3-red-flashes-pressure-switch-open

Pressure switch open with inducer pressure above the pressure switch setpoint: the switch is open when it should be closed.

Look outside for a blocked intake or exhaust pipe termination, such as snow, leaves or a nest.

York's manual says to check the pressure switch and the pressure transducer. A blocked vent or intake is the common outside cause to rule out, and a technician should test the switch and transducer.

York YP9C modulating gas furnace code 4-amber-flashes-reduced-capacity-airflow

Heating capacity is reduced due to a restriction in the circulating air system.

Check for a dirty filter and closed registers.

York's manual says to check for a dirty filter or closed registers. This is a reduced-capacity warning, not a lockout, so the furnace keeps running at lower output while the airflow problem lasts.

York YP9C modulating gas furnace code 5-amber-flashes-reduced-capacity-vent

Heating capacity is reduced due to a restriction in the combustion air or vent system.

Look outside for a blocked intake or exhaust pipe, such as snow, ice or a nest.

York's manual says to check for a blocked vent or air pipe or a clogged condensate drain, and adds that above 4,000 ft altitude this may also indicate automatic, normal derating for altitude. Vent and condensate work belongs to a technician.

York YP9C modulating gas furnace code 7-red-flashes-lockout-no-ignition

Lockout due to no ignition. The control tries three times for ignition. If flame cannot be established in three tries, the control locks out for 1 hour and then tries again to light.

Check that the gas supply valve to the furnace is open and that other gas appliances are working.

York's manual says to check the gas supply, the ignitor, the gas valve and the flame sensor. Ignitor, gas-valve and flame-sensor work belongs to a technician.

York YP9C modulating gas furnace code 9-red-flashes-reversed-polarity-or-grounding

Reversed line polarity or improper grounding.

Note whether any wiring work or a power-outlet change happened recently.

York's manual says to check the polarity of the incoming power to the furnace, and the grounding of the furnace, including the transformer ground and the L1 and neutral connections. That is line-voltage work for a licensed electrician or technician.

York YP9C modulating gas furnace code rapid-amber-flash-low-flame-sense

Low flame sense current.

Note that the burners light and then shut off.

York's manual says to check for a dirty or mislocated flame sensor rod. The manual gives normal flame sense current as about 3.7 microamps DC, a low-signal warning starting at 1.5 microamps and a control lockout point at 0.1 microamps. Measuring the current is technician work.

York YP9C modulating gas furnace code steady-off-led

No 24 V power to the control board.

Check that the furnace's power switch is on and that the 115 V breaker or fuse has not tripped.

York's manual: check the 24 volt control-circuit fuse on the board, the circuit breaker or fuse on the 115 volt supply, and the 24 volt transformer. Replacing the fuse or testing the transformer is technician work.

York YP9C modulating gas furnace code steady-red-led-control-fault

A control fault has been detected, or the board is not getting both of its supply voltages.

Turn the furnace power off at the switch for a minute and back on, and note whether the LED stays steady red.

York's manual says to check whether both 24 volts and 115 volts are being supplied to the board, correct the voltage problem if not, and replace the control board if both voltages are present. All of it is technician work.

York International — Modulating ECM Residential Gas Furnaces installation manual, YP9C series (5750151-UIM-G-0423)

York YP9C modulating furnace flash codes

York's YP9C is a modulating gas furnace that signals faults with red flashes on its control board, counted in a pattern, and this directory lists the codes the brand documents. The count tells you what the furnace has detected, such as an open rollout switch, an open high limit, a gas valve communication error or a lockout after the flame was lost several times. Because a modulating furnace adjusts its flame in steps, its codes include faults with the valve and its signals.

Count the red flashes at the control board's window and write them down. Check the air filter and the registers first, since restricted airflow causes limit trips. Look for water around the furnace and a kinked condensate drain. Look outside at the intake and exhaust pipes for snow, leaves or a nest. Do not remove panels or bypass any switch. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.

The model and serial are on the rating plate inside the furnace door. York's service asks for both, and the model tells which family of codes applies. A yearly check by a qualified technician catches most problems before the cold weather.

How do I read York's flash codes?

Count the red flashes in each group on the control board.

What can I check myself?

The filter, the registers, the drain and the outside pipes.
