Nintendo Switch has no sound or headset audio problems

Nintendo Switch (launch, revised and OLED models) has no sound or headset audio problems: output format/routing, HDMI display, controller jack, wireless headset and chat mix should be separated. Scoped to HAC-001, HAC-001(-01) and HEG-001.

When a Switch has no sound, Nintendo separates the console's speakers from anything plugged into it. Undock the console, unplug wired headphones and disconnect any Bluetooth audio device, then press the volume buttons: if Mute when Headphones are Disconnected is on, the speakers stay silent until you press a volume button or turn it off. While the console is docked, the console's own speakers shut off automatically because the sound goes to the TV. Static or crackling on an external device has its own checks of update, restart and power cycling the device.

  • Whether Mute when Headphones are Disconnected is on
  • The audio device make, and whether it works with another source

Try in this order

0 of 7 completed
  1. Undock the console

    Reversible

Take it out of the dock. Nintendo notes that while it is docked the sound from the console speakers shuts off automatically, so a silent console in the dock is normal.

  2. Unplug headphones and Bluetooth audio

    Reversible

Unplug any wired headset from the 3.5mm jack and disconnect any Bluetooth audio device. Press the volume buttons until you hear the console speakers.

  3. Check Mute when Headphones are Disconnected

    Reversible

Open System Settings, System and toggle Mute when Headphones are Disconnected off if it is on. When it is on, the speakers stay muted until you press a volume button.

  4. Update the console

    Reversible

Open System Settings, System, System Update. Nintendo lists an update as a step for both volume and audio problems.

  5. Restart the console

    Reversible

Hold POWER for at least three seconds, choose Power Options, then Restart, which reboots the device without a factory reset.

  6. Power cycle the audio device

    Reversible

If the device has its own power, switch it off and on. Try it with another audio source to see whether the fault is in the device or the console.

  7. Check the TV chain when docked

    Reversible

If you want sound through the TV, use the licensed dock and connect the HDMI cable directly to the TV with a sound bar or home theatre out of the chain while testing.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Audio out
3.5mm 4-pole stereo (CTIA standard) headphone jack on the launch, revised and OLED consoles, plus HDMI sound to the TV when docked.
Docked behavior
The console speakers turn off automatically while docked because sound goes to the TV.
Tools and supplies
A second pair of headphones or speakers to test with, and the TV remote.
What to tell Nintendo
Where the sound is missing, whether the volume buttons respond and the console serial number; not a part number.
Repair cost
iFixit's Switch repair page, quoting Nintendo's own estimated out-of-warranty prices as of January 2025, lists $99 for the original Switch, $139 for the OLED model and $89 for the Switch Lite. Those are estimates from a third party, not a quote: Nintendo sets the price when it receives the console. iFixit sells a $39.99 battery kit for the Switch and OLED and $29.99 for the Lite.
On a Switch Lite
The Lite's speakers are on the bottom edge and its headphone jack is on the top, with no TV or dock audio to set. Check the volume and mute, try wired headphones to rule out the speakers, and clear lint from the headphone jack.

These steps also fit the Nintendo Switch original model.

  • !If the console speakers are silent or distorted undocked with nothing connected and the console updated, follow Nintendo's console speaker steps and request service
  • !If the volume buttons do not respond after an update and restart, the console may need service
  • !If static comes from one external device only, replace or repair that device
