Xbox Series X|S storage is full or games will not install

Xbox Series X|S (disc and digital models) storage is full or games will not install: installed games, captures, reserved space and expansion compatibility should be measured. Scoped to Series X RRT-00001 / 1882 and Series S 1883.

An Xbox Series X that is full has Microsoft's plain rule to plan around: games optimized for the Series X|S must be installed on the internal SSD or on the Storage Expansion Card, so a USB drive can hold them but not run them. Free space by uninstalling what you are not playing, because saved data syncs online and returns when you reinstall; use Manage game and add-ons to drop DLC you do not use; or add a Storage Expansion Card, which performs identically to the internal SSD. A USB drive works for Xbox One and older games and for parking optimized games between plays.

Differential

Likely causes of “Xbox Series X|S storage is full or games will not install”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

How to confirm Open Profile and system, Settings, System, Storage devices, choose the drive and View contents to see what each game uses

  2. 2

Optimized games parked on a USB drive

What separates it A Series X|S game shows as installed but will not play, and it sits on an external drive

How to confirm Move it back to the internal SSD or the Storage Expansion Card, as Microsoft says optimized games must be installed there to play

  3. 3

An external drive that does not meet the requirements

What separates it The drive is treated as media storage or does not appear

How to confirm Check it is USB 3.0 or later, 128 GB or more, partitioned, and that no more than three storage devices are attached

How to confirm Use Manage game and add-ons and unselect add-ons you do not use; items under More add-ons take no console space

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • The free space shown for each drive under Storage devices
  • Whether you use a Storage Expansion Card or a USB drive, and its size and make
  • Which games are largest and whether they are Optimized for Xbox Series X|S
  • The console: Series X, Series X Digital or Series S, and its internal capacity

  1. Read what is using the space

    Reversible

Press the Xbox button, choose Profile and system, Settings, System, Storage devices. Each drive shows the percentage used and the free space; choose a drive and View contents to see how much each game uses.

  2. Uninstall what you are not playing

    Reversible

Highlight the game in My games and apps, press the Menu button and choose Uninstall. Microsoft says preferences and saved games sync online, so reinstalling brings them straight back.

  3. Trim add-ons

    Reversible

Choose Manage game and add-ons, select the game, unselect the add-ons you do not use and Save changes. Add-ons under More add-ons need no local space.

  4. Use smart storage

    Reversible

In the Free up space screen, Xbox suggests items that are good choices to remove. You can accept its choices or pick your own and choose Remove selected.

  5. Add a Storage Expansion Card

    Reversible

Remove the protective cover and plug the card firmly into the slot on the back. Take the console's first update before you connect it. It adds 512GB, 1TB or 2TB, works on Series X|S only and performs identically to the internal SSD.

  6. Set up a USB drive for older games

    Reversible

Use a USB 3.0 or later drive of 128 GB or more. The console will format it, so back up first. Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games can play from it; Optimized games can be stored but must move back to play.

  7. Move or copy games

    Reversible

In My games and apps, See all, Games, highlight a game, open the game box in the upper right, tick the items and choose a drive, then Move selected or Copy selected.

  8. Fix a card or drive that is not detected

    Reversible

Update the console, restart, reseat the card or try another USB port. If you use Sleep mode, open Power options and untick the setting that turns off storage when the console is off.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Series X and Series X Digital
1TB custom NVMe SSD on both. The Series X has a disc drive and the Series X Digital has none; the storage steps are the same for both.
Storage Expansion Card slot
The slot is on the back of the console and takes the card only when it is fully seated; Microsoft says to remove the protective cover first.
Tools and supplies
A USB 3.0 drive of 128 GB or more, a Storage Expansion Card if you add one and a towel to rest the console on. No screwdriver is needed; the card plugs in.
Support details
Give Microsoft the four-digit console model number (1882 for the Series X) and the drive's make; not a part number.

Stop boundary

When this stops being a self-service repair

  • !If the console still does not see a correctly seated Storage Expansion Card after a restart, contact Xbox support
  • !If a game shows as corrupted after a move, uninstall and reinstall it and contact support if it repeats
  • !If an external drive is not detected on any port after the steps, try it on a computer to check whether the drive itself has failed

Sources behind this answer

Where the manufacturer's article stops. Microsoft does not endorse a USB drive make in these pages, so this page lists requirements only. The Series S has a separate storage page because its internal SSD is smaller and its resolution target differs.
