Xbox consoles and problems
Xbox Series X, Series S and Xbox One models share most support steps: power cycle, update, check the HDMI cable and, on models with a drive, test the disc. The Series S has no disc drive. Storage is a frequent problem on the 512 GB Series S, and a Series X with a disc that sticks or clicks needs the manual eject steps or service. Pick your console for the steps that match.
Xbox consoles can usually be brought back without a reset. A console that will not start can be power cycled by holding the power button for about ten seconds and unplugging the power cable for a couple of minutes. If the console starts but a game will not load, restart it, check for updates in My games & apps and look at the storage in Settings, System, Storage devices, since a full drive stops updates.
The Xbox startup troubleshooter, reached by holding the Pair and Eject buttons at power-on on supported consoles, offers options to reset the console without losing games. For network problems, run the connection test in Settings, General, Network settings. Keep the console ventilated, as overheating causes shutdowns.
How do I power cycle an Xbox?
Hold the power button on the console for about ten seconds until it shuts off, unplug the power cable for a couple of minutes, then plug it in and restart.
