NETGEAR Orbi mesh wifi cannot open websites because DNS fails

NETGEAR Orbi mesh wifi (Orbi 970, 960, 850 and 750 series) cannot open websites because DNS fails: resolver, filter, VPN and cache should be separated from a site or provider outage. Scoped to Orbi 970 Series (RBE971/RBE970), with the Orbi 960, 850 and 750 series in the model notes.

Two NETGEAR features interfere with DNS on an Orbi. Circle and NETGEAR Armor take over DNS handling when they are enabled, so a custom DNS setting will not stick or will not take effect until they are switched off; NETGEAR community answers put it plainly that Circle and Armor have to be disabled to change DNS. In AP mode the Internet Setup, WAN Setup and LAN Setup pages are grayed out, so DNS is set on the router in front instead.

The checks in more detail

Use a DNS change for sites that will not load while other traffic works, or for a provider whose DNS is unreliable. In the router's web interface, DNS lives under the internet setup settings; change one thing at a time, save, and load a few pages you have not visited recently. If a computer still uses another DNS server, that is the computer's private DNS or a VPN.

If sites fail after the change, revert to the automatic setting from your provider. If a provider outage is the problem, no DNS change fixes it. NETGEAR's slow-connection article suggests the direct-to-modem test to separate provider faults from router settings. Keep the previous DNS values written down. DNS changes are easy to undo, so test them one at a time.

If a site works on mobile data but not at home, DNS or a filter is a likely cause, and trying another DNS server for ten minutes is a cheap test. Some devices have their own private DNS setting that ignores the network's choice, so if one device behaves differently, check its own settings before changing the router again. If you enable Circle or Armor later, expect any custom DNS you set to stop applying, so record the reason you changed it and re-check after you turn any security service on.

Differential

Likely causes of “NETGEAR Orbi mesh wifi cannot open websites because DNS fails”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

    Circle or Armor on

What separates it The DNS setting is ignored because Circle or Armor has taken over the DNS handling

How to confirm Turn Circle and Armor off before you change the DNS, and then enter your own servers

  2. 2

    AP mode

What separates it The Internet Setup pages are grayed out because the router is running in AP mode

How to confirm Change the DNS on the upstream router instead, since an Orbi in AP mode does not manage it

  3. 3

    A typo

What separates it Websites fail to load because a DNS address was typed with a mistake

How to confirm Correct the address that you typed, or revert to the automatic setting

  4. 4

    A device with private DNS

What separates it One device ignores the network's DNS because it uses a private DNS setting of its own

How to confirm Turn the private DNS off on the device, so that it uses the DNS of the network

  5. 5

    A provider outage

What separates it The problem looks like a DNS failure but is really an outage at the provider

How to confirm Test at the modem with a computer connected directly, to see whether the internet works there

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • The DNS servers that you have entered in the router
  • Whether Circle or Armor is on
  • Which mode the router is in, router mode or AP mode
  • What fails to load and what still works on the network

Try in this order

0 of 7 completed
  1. Check for Circle or Armor

    Reversible

Check for Circle or Armor, and turn them off first, since they take over DNS handling.

  2. Check the mode

    Reversible

Check the mode, because AP mode grays out the internet settings pages where DNS is set.

  3. Enter the DNS

    Reversible

Enter the DNS servers that you want in the internet settings pages of the router.

  4. Save

    Reversible

Save the change, by applying it, and wait a moment for the router to take it up.

  5. Test

    Reversible

Test the change by loading new pages that you have not opened before, and check they load.

  6. Revert if needed

    Reversible

Revert if needed, by switching the DNS back to automatic in the same settings pages.

  7. Test at the modem

    Reversible

Test at the modem if you are unsure of the cause, by connecting a computer straight to it.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Circle and Armor
NETGEAR describes Smart Parental Controls as the current parental controls solution and Circle as the earlier one.
AP mode
Internet Setup, WAN Setup and LAN Setup are grayed out in AP mode.
Other models this page answers
These steps also fit the Orbi 960 Series mesh, Orbi 750 Series mesh.

Stop boundary

When this stops being a self-service repair

  • !If sites fail on different DNS servers, call the provider
  • !If the setting will not save, contact NETGEAR support
  • !If only one device fails, check its own DNS

Exact questions

Common questions

Why is my DNS setting ignored?+

Circle or Armor may control DNS.

Can I change DNS in AP mode?+

No, the pages are grayed out.

Does Armor use DNS?+

Armor takes over the DNS handling, so a custom DNS setting may not take effect.

Should I revert if it fails?+

Yes, revert to automatic if the change makes things worse, and test again.

Will changing DNS on the router change it on satellites too?+

Yes — an Orbi's satellites inherit the main router's network settings rather than holding their own, so a DNS change made once on the router applies mesh-wide without needing to be repeated on each satellite.
