NETGEAR Orbi mesh wifi guest network cannot reach devices, cast or print

NETGEAR Orbi mesh wifi (Orbi 970, 960, 850 and 750 series) guest network cannot reach devices, cast or print: guest isolation is usually intentional; internet and local discovery are separate permissions. Scoped to Orbi 970 Series (RBE971/RBE970), with the Orbi 960, 850 and 750 series in the model notes.

On an Orbi 970 system a guest network is switched on in the Orbi app (Wi-Fi, Guest Wi-Fi) or on the router's web page at orbilogin.com, under Guest Network. Turn it on, pick a network name and a password, and choose the security type; the guest network is then broadcast by the router and the satellites. By default guests can reach the internet but not your main network, so a guest phone cannot find a printer, a speaker or a smart-home hub on the main network. NETGEAR's page also offers a setting to let guests see each other and reach the local network, which is rarely wanted.

If guests cannot join, check that the name was typed exactly, that the security type is one their device supports and that the guest network is actually enabled after the satellites finish updating.

Exact questions

Common questions

Can guests on my Orbi see my printer?+

Not by default. Guest devices are kept apart from the main network on purpose, so a printer or speaker on the main network is invisible to them.

Does the guest network work on the satellites too?+

Yes. The Orbi router shares the guest network through its satellites, so guests can join near any of them.

Why can't an old device join my Orbi guest network?+

It may not support the security type selected. Choose WPA2 for compatibility.

Should I put smart-home devices on the guest network?+

Usually not. Many cannot talk to your phone from the guest network, so keep them on the main network.

How do I stop guests using too much bandwidth?+

Use the Orbi app's guest options or the router's controls where available, and turn the guest network off when it is not needed.
