Display

4.7-inch widescreen LCD with IPS technology, 1334-by-750 at 326 ppi. Control positions, reachability and how much fits on screen all change with size, so a procedure written for another model in this line will not map one-to-one onto this one.

Chip

A13 Bionic. The chip generation governs how long this model keeps receiving iOS updates, and it is the underlying reason an app can stop working here while running normally on a newer iPhone — a support-window matter rather than a fault.

Connector

Lightning. Lightning cables and adapters are not interchangeable with the USB-C iPhones and a USB-C cable will not fit at all. Lightning cables also fail internally at the strain point near either connector, which is why a cable swap is the first test for slow or intermittent charging.

Biometric

Touch ID — a fingerprint reader, not face recognition. Advice about lighting, angles and face coverings does not apply here. What affects this model is moisture and the skin itself changing, and enrolling the same finger twice improves reliability more than repeated attempts against a single reference.

Camera

12MP Wide camera. A 12-megapixel main sensor produces much smaller files than the 48-megapixel iPhones, so a storage complaint on this model is less likely to be photos than it would be on a newer one.

Storage options

Sold in 64GB/128GB/256GB. The 64GB entry tier is the single most common cause of storage trouble on this model — a current iOS install plus a photo library leaves very little margin, and an update needs room to unpack and stage as well as to store, so it can refuse with what looks like adequate free space.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi 6 with 2x2 MIMO. This matters directly to Wi-Fi troubleshooting on this model: the generation determines which bands and features it can use, and a router running a newer standard will fall back rather than refusing — so a phone underperforming a newer sibling on the same network is often specification rather than fault.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth 5.0. Version differences affect range, reconnection behaviour and which accessory features are available — a newer accessory paired to an older Bluetooth version simply operates at the older one's capabilities rather than failing, which is often mistaken for a pairing fault.

Screen brightness

625 nits maximum brightness (typical). Brightness is one of the largest single consumers of battery on any phone, so a model rated at a higher figure will spend more when it is actually driven to that level — and outdoor readability complaints are usually this specification rather than a display fault.

Water resistance

Rated IP67, a lower rating than the IP68 models later in this line. It covers splashes and brief incidental exposure rather than submersion, it degrades with age and drops, and liquid damage is not covered by warranty.

SIM

Supports eSIM alongside a physical nano-SIM. An eSIM does not travel with the handset the way a plastic SIM does — a phone swap, a reset or a repair can leave the profile behind, and restoring it is a carrier action rather than a phone setting.

Wireless charging

No MagSafe magnet array on this model. Where wireless charging is supported it relies on alignment alone, which makes placement fussier than on the MagSafe iPhones and makes a thick case far more likely to defeat it.

Battery rating

Apple rates this model at up to 13 hours of video playback. Compare your own runtime against that figure and against your own history — the rating varies widely across this line and a smaller iPhone is not faulty for lasting less than a Max.

Video recording

4K video recording at 24, 25, 30 or 60 fps. Frame rate and resolution are the dominant factor in how quickly video fills storage, and they are also what pushes the phone hardest thermally — sustained high-frame-rate recording is the most common cause of a camera that stops mid-take.

Weight

5.22 ounces (148 grams). Worth knowing where a mount is involved: the heavier models in this line stress adhesive mounts and magnetic car holders considerably more than the lighter ones.

Panel type

An LCD panel rather than OLED. Dark mode saves no meaningful power here — the backlight illuminates the whole panel regardless of content — and the per-pixel dimming and true blacks described for OLED iPhones do not apply.
